To be fair over the years MM has been pretty streaky in his runs of form but has overcome them to a certain degree using smoke & mirrors whether it be tactically or enforced changes hence my comments pre- Rochdale which still stand that there’s nil attack or wing coverage for a 442 formation despite the good fortune of picking up no injuries or suspensions over recent weeks! A pretty ridiculous & avoidable situation to find ourselves in even without the benefit of hindsight!

I don’t think the football was all bad under Les Parry though it did come at a time when Johnson was running things down. L1 was a very different place then though.

Agree with MH that the recruitment failures over the summer weren’t limited to up front. The lack of attacking wide players in the side is limiting and neither Morris or Hawkes are orthodox wingers. If the rumours are correct we did try buying Patrick off Carlisle. Stratulis seems to be doing well at Connah’s Quay, hopefully we are monitoring his progress, while Lomax also has potential.

The problem with this Boz is that they are not players that are going to make much impact. It won't fix the problems we have this season.

We have limited options in the squad, but it is debatable whether those limitations are all due to 'recruitment failures'. You can make that argument in the case of the strikers, but in other areas we simply don't have the resources to have, say, another Hawkes and Morris in the squad. We have enough defenders, but defenders are cheap, particularly if they are of dubious quality like Jameson and Byrne.

You may be right Ian, but until they’ve been given a proper chance, it’s hard to be sure.

According to Paul Simpson in the summer: "The rumours about him leaving the club to go to Tranmere are absolute garbage and I don’t know where it’s come from.”

He made quite a song and dance about it:

Message boards and social media. Sounds like he's struggling to cope with it all. Maybe he should talk to Keith Hill. :D

I watched Challinor's pre match interview earlier. Always likes coming back and for him and his assistant (Clint Hill), it'll be special. He made the point that he's never won at PP when the away manager and thinks they have as good as chance as any tonight given their momentum. Hopefully whatever the result Connor J gets some action and gets a good reception.

I also spoke to a Stockport mate of mine who was telling me how strong their squad is, including their subs. Horsfield at the back was a great signing from Northampton helping them to 4 consecutive clean sheets. Callum McDonald has been very good at left wing back and their front are a handful. Wootton with his physicality and pace and Madden who is a goal poacher. You'll only have to look at our bench to know how far the clubs are in terms of budget.

Unless we see a big improvement from Saturday, I just can't see a rovers win.

Mellon has clearly done well to keep us above Stockport all season given the disparity in resources. Challinor will have been under a bit of pressure prior to their recent upturn.

They actually had quite a poor start and only their last few games have they started to find some form. Hopefully we can can turn the form tables upside down tonight.

Dave Challinor and Clint Hill were two of our best post-war players. They helped to get us to our only major final in 2000. If only Clint had stayed on the pitch until the end, we might now have a national trophy in our cabinet. We put up a great fight on the day and I was proud of the lads.

Dave's long throws were legendary and Clint had a long and successful career.

5 at the back with Jameson in for dropped Hawkes. Merrie stays in the side. Lewis on the bench. Presumably to match the visitors up
