Managerial careers are strange. They usually start at a certain level and if they do well, they move to a higher level and so on. Eventually, almost inevitably, they end up getting the sack. If they are lucky, they get offered a similar job but often it’s a level down. Then after another sacking they move further down. Few managerial jobs last more than three years before the sack or being poached by a bigger club. The career pattern seems to be to progress in the early years followed by an inevitable decline. Once they start to slide, they seldom move back up. Moyes is an exception.
My conclusion is that you are better employing a younger manager on the way up. An experienced manager sacked from a bigger club is unlikely to be the answer. You may quote Rob Edwards, Dave Watson and Mike Jackson, but you need to get the
right young manager! Not easy, as we have seen!
