Well that’s it. Four points off seventh and with a poorer goal different it’s effectively 5 points. Ironically Stevenage who dealt us a huge blow on Saturday are beaten tonight by our play off rivals Mansfield.
Hopefully planning for next season starts now with a real change in the squad needed.

And a change in the tactics as they haven't worked

Depressing set of results tonight. I have this recurring nightmare that both Wrexham and Stockport will be above us in the league next season with two big away followings celebrating in the Cowshed; who’d have thought it not so long ago.
It’s okay, it’s just a nightmare and won’t come true……….
On the bright side, if Exeter win the league, at least we can say we did the double over the champions; evidence that we’re champion material next season ;)

Further on the bright side the new recruitment strategy can kick in at 9am tomorrow morning safe in the knowledge we only need focus on L2 standard players... have to say I had felt it was inevitable for some time that our wretched away performances would mean no promotion but the standard has been so poor this year overall it is a terrible disappointment and such a wasted opportunity. Next year will likely be far harder.

In some ways it’s a relief that it’s all over bar the shouting (hence me posting more than usual). It’s the lingering hope that kills you. It’s definitely time to accept and adjust to another season (at least the one) in League Two. Stockport will be a new ground for my son (he’s already done Crewe and Wrexham) and it’s highly likely we’ll also do Doncaster to add to his list; every cloud has a silver lining.

The second half of this season has been such a huge disappointment. We can only hope that recruitment will be better, signing not only decent players but ones who are wholly committed and willing to give 110% for the team. If we start poorly then MM will be under the microscope. Second comings do not always end well.

I think alongside the recruitment needing to be better, Micky needs to get more out of the players and encourage them to be more attacking especially away from home.

It’s amazing to think just 2/3 months ago we were second with a decent buffer to the play offs. That along with our home record showed we are capable on our day but just not consistent enough on our travels

Our lack of wins away was always going to be a big issue and needs resolving.

I agree. Expectations, realistic or not will always be high at Tranmere. Another poor season and the buck will stop with the manager as it always does in football. I would say though, MP is not one to rush into sacking managers and I think he’s got a lot of backing from the board.

First and foremost, we have to recruit much better then last season.

Disappointing anti-climax after it promised so much at one point. The Forest Green hammering at home looks a key and pivotal moment when you look at our league record for the ten games prior to that psychologically damaging event; it still haunts me today when you think that there were 10,000 plus home supporters to witness our biggest humiliation of the season.
I don't think that game was the turning point. Our best performance of the season against Swindon actually came after that defeat.

I think the injury to Glatzel in that Swindon game was key. Although Nevitt has improved in recent months, we never looked as fluid as an attacking side without him, and the injury to Spearing shortly prior was significant, particularly away from home. We went into a run of successive away games at Walsall without those two and lost four in a row, which is where the wheels really came off. However, irrespective of those issues our away form needs to improve.

I agree it is almost certainly all over now.

However, if we win on Saturday we could go into the final game with a mathematical chance of making the top seven, if Mansfield lose or either of Bristol Rovers and Sutton fail to win at the weekend.

We are probably where we should be in the league based upon the vast majority of the seasons poor performances. Thankfully we had that very good run that took us to second but that really wasn’t a true reflection of the performances and the dire football. Very few positives from this season sadly. As has been said countless times the recruitment is going to be key, but for me MM has to change the style of play. Even now I don’t think he really knows what his best and most effective team and style of play is.

I really hope that he is able to adapt and give the fans (especially to away games) some entertainment. Surely that’s what people pay their money for at the end of the day!

The quality of the football and the results at Prenton Park have both been fine.

If we are going to objectively assess the successes and failures of the season, Mellon will rightly point to the best home record in the division, and a number of those performances have been entertaining, particularly since Christmas and the arrival of Hemmings (Scunthorpe, Swindon, Mansfield, Exeter, Carlisle until the referee intervened).

I’d agree with RLC that the pivotal point was the run of dire away results starting at Walsall. Even there we’d probably have got something but for Clarke’s rush of blood. Spearing’s experience was missed during that spell, bit more equivocal on Glatzel.

There were some poor home performances in the first half of the season, Hartlepool when we ultimately won, Sutton and Northampton come to mind. The second half has been better save Forest Green where we were outclassed, the recruitment of Hemmings and the development of Nevitt have been factors in that.

I think once Nevitt was fully re-integrated, he and Hemmings looked very effective as a front pairing. However, Glatzel's injury meant disruption in terms of the pattern of play and that was evident in the run of away defeats. For example, at Walsall we actually tried a front pairing of Jolley and Hemmings which did not work.
