Yeah I agree with Boz. Zoom deserves a chance to stake a claim for the left back slot, but ronnie has already said he is looking to bring a quality left back in so I don't think he has total confidence in Zoom as 1st choice left back but as has been said, on our resources, unless we unearth a gem, we can't really expect anymore.

When Ronnie returned, Zoum was initially used as cover for Robinson on the wide-left. Only once we were safe and with an eye to this season, was he deployed at left-back. I don't think it's a given that he will be first choice in that position.

That was a matter of us needing cover on the left wing rather than at fullback, where buchs remained fit and ever present. Zoum's a v good fullback at this level, too good to sit on the bench, and we can't really justify bringing in quality cover/competition in such a specialist position given financial constraints imo. it would be a waste of resources.

Last season Zoum started as first choice left-back with Buchanan as cover, but after the Doncaster debacle, the latter was brought into the team and remained. "Very good" is rather a generous assessment of Zoum's ability at this level imo; he can get pulled out of position and is prone to making rash challenges. Although he does offer something different, as one of the few players with any pace in the squad. As Sparky says, the manager has indicated an intention to recruit another left-back so let's see who is brought in.

I agree. Zoom does a good job at this level and would have no worries him occupying that position all season. We need to concentrate on other areas of the pitch mainly up front and midfield.

NEW SIGNINGS

A signathon at Preston! They have just signed Laird from Stevenage. Eight new players so far!! Rovers zero to the best of our knowledge!

Of course, Preston can afford to spend more on a reserve than we can on a first-teamer. If Welsh and Buchanan wanted more money, they've probably done OK, but if they want regular first-team football they'd have been better advised to stay.

Ronnie said he tried to get Odejayi, Wroe and Amoo, who've gone to Rotherham and Preston instead. I'm not a great enthusiast of listing players we've tried and failed to sign, but I suppose it shows that things are ongoing behind the scenes. The reality is that because of our finances, we'll be doing the bulk of our shopping in the July bargain basement.

NEW PLAYERS

I agree Boz. I know Ronnie is trying hard but when he has to say that he is waiting on a response to offers I suppose the inevitable assumption is that those players are looking to see if they can do better elsewhere before coming to Rovers! It will be interesting to see how Westley goes trying to build a new team almost from scratch. As we all know it is about the team and how it works together and not the sum of the talents of the individual players.

Not an easy task for Ronnie. Trying to keep and sign players that will improve the squad on very little pulling power. Makes things even worse now that players are holding out for the best deal possible. Means we won't get the majority of our players until the latter part of the pre-season.

Just have to be patient.

NEW SIGNINGS

I agree entirely Ian. Just out of interest - another two at Preston today - now ten! Lee Holmes and someone whose name escapes me. When will it end and will Welshy and Buchanan make the bench!

Jeffrey Monakana is the other, apparently he has come through the Arsenal academy. PNE must be paying good wages to have achieved all these signings so quickly. Still a major challenge to pull a team together from scratch, but Chris Powell succeeeded at Charlton last season. TBH I hope they fail miserably!

Tyrone Loran would make a good replacement for Welsh...

Anthony McNamee has been released by Norwich - tricky left winger with a bit of pace could be what we need.

i spoke to Tyrone Loran the day before he went, signed my lads shirt and said he really didnt wanna go, and he loved the club and fans.

When Graham Kavangh was playing at Cardiff and the best midfielder in our league, Tyrone had him in his pocket both games I watched, was an awesome display.

How old is Tyrone now do you think??? 32/33ish

highly doubt loran would leave his native country to play for tranmere at this stage in his career + highly doubt we will be paying fees for players when so many are out of contract

also highly doubt we could attract mcnamee

According to Wikipedia, Tyrone is still only 30. Since leaving Rovers, he has been playing in Holland. He has clearly made a success of his career there, featuring mainly in their premiership. For a while he played for Netherlands Antilles in the World Cup. However, in the last two or three seasons, he hasn't played many games. There is no record on Wikipedia of him playing for anyone last season, so I don't know where he is or whether he might be available.

Hudds have just released several players including, quite surprisingly, Gary Roberts and perhaps less so, Danny Cadamateri.

Suspect both might be on Ronnies radar but the latter is probably a more realistic option as I reckon Roberts will get snapped up fairly soon, but is a good winger at our level.

Was hoping Antony Kay might have been one released but doesnt seem to be.

Ian Goodison... who else!
James Beattie released by Sheff Utd, reckon we could afford his wages?!

Would solve our lack of firepower up front.

Not sure about Beattie - his wages aside, he always gives the impression to me of being overweight, injury prone - plus he didnt pull up any trees at Sheff Utd towards the end of the season, in league one.

Think I would rather have Bas Savage !
