Managers need time when they inherit inadequate players and have to completely rebuild a squad. That is not the case with Hill and performances and results have been unacceptable to date. If he did not think he could get a tune out of the very good group of players he inherited he should not have accepted the job (or been offered it). Even after a dozen games, there is still no evidence what the style of play or identity of the team is.I agree, Ian. He was given time both times at Rochdale and made immediate progress but promotion took more than a few months. At Barnsley and Bolton, he was not given enough support.
Given his past record, I think he could get us up next season, but how many managers achieve promotion in their first season at a new club with another manager’s players? I’m not saying he hasn’t made mistakes, but let’s not assume he’s not a capable manager. To get promotion you need either a top manager (which we couldn’t get) or take a chance with a bright, ambitious rookie (which we’ve tried before). Let’s get behind Keith. He’s the only manager we’ve got and MP won’t sack him unless we plummet into the relegation zone, which is unlikely.
Where is the evidence he was not supported at Barnsley ? He simply was not good enough for the job. Even at Bolton he was able to bring in a lot of experienced players last January but their results remained atrocious in the second half of last season.
Some managers can only perform at a very small club where expectations and pressure are very low and that might be the case with Hill.
Mark Palios clearly believes he should be able to make an impact this season, with these players. He has been given a six month contract which almost certainly won't be extended if we don't challenge for promotion. That tells us everything.
