Tranmere Rovers have appointed Darrell Clarke as the club’s new manager.

World Cup 2026

People can talk about Councils like they talk about the US Congress.
Like it or not, that’s the reality of how international membership organisations work. Including FIFA.

And be careful to draw a distinction between how FIFA distributes WC funds to FIFA member bodies for the development of the game with outright corruption. Admittedly the line between politics and corruption can become blurry but, as FIFA went through one high profile scandal with high profile casualties, they’re hardly going to repeat those same mistakes.

Infantino rightly has plenty of question marks hanging over him and he’s by no means Mr Popular, but allegations of outright corruption are pure conjecture. That might change one day, but innocent until proven guilty, etc.

You may be right but there is no transparency. We do not know either way. It is always possible to judge people by the company they keep and Infantino seems to be close to a very corrupt American President. Anyway, who knows!

Coincidentally, there is an article on the Independent website by Miguel Delaney talking about the issues surrounding FIFA.

Keeping the company of world leaders, especially those whose countries are hosting FIFA events, comes with the job.

Unfortunately, as many world leaders and global organisations have found, Trump is wildly erratic and it can often take extreme flattery to get him onside…at least for a little while. Of course, awarding him a peace prize was grotesque but, if they hadn’t done that, FIFA would have had to come up with something else to butter him up, especially given the administration’s immigration policies and their approach to enforcement.

Yes, the Somali ref fell foul and the Iran national team had to put up with restrictions, but things could easily have been much worse but for FIFA’s influence. For example, FIFA pushed hard to allow Iran to participate at all - which was a big concession from an administration that’s not only clamped down on who can enter the country at the best of times, but was actually at war with Iran!

Yes he’s good. Like I said, there’s no shortage of question marks over Infantino and his leadership, and very valid question marks, but FIFA is still sometimes too easy a target. Arguably much of that’s of their own making anyway - e.g. by the lack of transparency, as you mentioned - but dismissing it all as corruption just clouds things unnecessarily.

Anyway, looking forward to seeing Harry, Jude and Donald parading the trophy on Sunday! ;)

FIFA has had a long history of dodgy practice. Remember 2006 when South Africa looked a shoo in? At the last moment the Caribbean member was nobbled and it went to Germany instead.

Then the 2018 and 2022 events were awarded together, leading to accusations of horse trading. Why would you award a World Cup to such a hostile nation as Russia? (England bid and got only three votes!).

Why would you award the event to a very small and very hot country like Qatar, then realising it could only be played in the winter, causing no end of disruption?

Why is the 2030 event being held in three continents? So that in 2034 it has to be held in Asia. The only nation which can afford it is Saudi Arabia. (Australia, who are part of the Asian confederation, realised what was happening and have already chosen not to bid as they know it is a fix.)

Proving collusion in such an opaque organisation is difficult. In any case, even if all the European nations vote against, all the others will back Infantino as his actions generate lots of money for the developing nations.

Just be grateful that the Euros are generally above board.

Back to this Tournament - Wednesday, bookies have England as very slight favourites to win, with a draw at 90 minutes but England winning in extra time the bookies most likely outcome. That makes England 2nd favourites, behind France, to win the whole thing. This could be our best chance. This is England though, so I'm sure many/most are expecting a nervy watch, England have the capability though to make it a dominant display.

Man for man, other than Messi and, arguably Alvarez, Argentina are not that good. Romero and McAlister had average seasons. Enzo blows hot and cold etc. would be nice to get one over on big head Martinez! Will age catch up with Messi? We will soon see!

Indeed, arrests were made, charges were brought and big heads rolled in connection with the corruption around the bidding for 2018 and 2022. And changes to governance made.

Anyway, it’s a global organisation. I’d love to hear a head of any global sporting body rule out holding its flagship event in the Arab world simply because it’s too ‘inconvenient’ (….for Western Europeans).

Given too that FIFA exists to promote and develop the sport around the world, by necessity that involves funding projects in nations that can least afford it. There’s nothing wrong with the developing world getting a generous slice of the pie. And all the politicking that goes with it….or certainly much of it. Those blurry lines again..

As for the above-board Euros, I’m looking forward to the 2028 semis and final at Wembley. Just two tournaments after the last semis and final at Wembley. A victory for good honest English statesmanship! ;)

I think whoever wins will need to score 3 to do it. Looking at both sides’ defences and attacks, I’d fancy either of them to get three. But I’ll go with 3-2 to England to take the next step on the journey we started under Southgate.

The final is going to have a half time show so will be around 25/30 minutes long even though the laws of the game state it should only be 15 minutes long, I'm sure the advertisers will be happy as will the money FIFA will get.

Ludicrous.

Spain with a comfortable 2 0 win over a very disappointing France team.

The French front four is the best in the tournament, but they have a very average midfield. That did not matter against average opposition, but it was shown up tonight against Spain, Rodri running the show.

I know I am being pessimistic but Spain looked very good. Any opponent will have to be absolutely on the top of their game to beat them. Interestingly a number of their team have been together through the various age groups so they will have a very good understanding.

Why did we sit back so deep at 1-0? It’s only going to end one way.
