Thinking it through as I was sure Hill would have gone by now if Hill's contract says he gets an automatic extension if we get promoted which MP said is the case then I guess MP can't sack him until mathematically we are not going up or else MP is up for breach of contract and has to pay out on the length of the extension which I assume is at least 1 year at L1 salary levels?!!
Reflects badly on him in all honesty... but he made the call....

I can't believe that is the nature of the contract. I am sure the promotion clause is only activated if he completes a full season and we are promoted. Otherwise, Hill could theoretically manage us for five games, get fired, and still claim two years of salary when his successor gets us promoted.

I can't believe any solicitor would draw up a contract like that for a club at this level, or that Palios would sign it.

Yes, ADD. I was thinking that. If there is a release clause before the end of the season, surely it won’t allow a termination while we are still in the top seven with four games to go. You can’t break a contract on what might happen. Trends can be reversed.

I am replying to your message which did not make a lot of sense to me. I don't think we would agree a contract that prevents us from sacking a manager for poor performance.

And don't describe me as 'a one' or anything else.

We can still draft a contract that gives us the right to fire him at any time. The second season could be conditional on him completing the first season.

Didn't make a lot of sense to you - really?? Funny how you managed to reply in detail considering it didn't make a lot of sense to you....

Re the contract, particularly as Nicola is a solicitor.

I would divide the Hill question into two components;

On the January recruitment front, unsure how much of the blame lies with Hill, given there seems to have been some involvement from Mark Palios and the ex-agent Stephen Beck. The ITK poster on another site suggests there was some imperative to reduce budget costs on the playing side, which may account for players moving on, while Jolley is not likely to have been a Hill-instigated move and his state of development not as advanced as believed, though with a handful of Wigan appearances you'd have thought he could offer something. Nya Kirby had played with Dawes at Blackpool, so again probably not Keith's idea, while who knows regarding Nugent. The only one appearing a definite Keith recruit was Crawford.

However the use of the players he has got at his disposal has been poor. This has been demonstrated by the freezing out of certain players like CBT, the repeatedly substituting of certain others, such as Lloyd and Morris and the regular use of Nugent who is clearly not up to it. Even with Vaughan's injury, we could have been set up in ways to maximise the players who are available. Sticking Morris up as a lone striker for the opening hour was a case in point. We did play some good football when Vaughan was available under Keith, but once James got injured, it's mostly been dross. On the season-ticket renewal question, for a variety of reasons, I am undecided whether to renew, but the quality of football we've been playing recently is certainly no incentive to do so.

A resounding zero for Hill at the polls. I don't think we should get too entangled in what the contract states as we clearly have no idea. Like it or not, I now think that with four games to go, MP will not make any changes. If we end up in the playoffs, then we see where we end up at the end of it. If it's promotion then Hill stays otherwise it's the chop. Similarly, if we end up outside the playoffs, it's the chop.

Jolley never started a league match for Wigan and his sub appearances in league matches barely added up to 20 minutes in total. Wigan's financial issues got him on to the bench a lot. He is nowhere near ready for our first team and I'd be looking to farm him out on loan to non-league next season - whatever division we are in

When we signed him saw reference to Wigan fans being disappointed, but had a look at their forum after you posted and couldn't find much mention of him at all. Think he got a couple of goals when they beat Liverpool in the Pizza Cup group stages. Have to query why we brought him in, if that far off being ready.

we have had a few over the last few years but when you look at the forwards the posh always get from the NON-LG and sell them on for massive fees makes you wonder why we don't do the same especially after the success of cook and Norwood we should look for more of them

In hindsight maybe we should have spent the Jolley money on someone from non league. When was the last time we signed someone like that? I always remember Ian Nolan from marine. Darren Stephenson from Chorley didn’t work out but I was looking at Mendes who is scoring for morcambe of late who came from non league and Accrington recently signing the Southport captain. There must be some decent players out there who would be cheap but more experienced that a youngster like Jolley

I think even a loanee from an EPL / Championship club would have been a better option. We just needed someone capable of contributing in the first team squad, rather than being completely reliant on Nugent.

It’s still quite unbelievable that he is giving Nugent game time when you have the likes of CBT on the bench. That alone is a sackable offence!

I agree, although I thought Nugent looked marginally better with Vaughan alongside him yesterday. However, they probably won't be fit enough this season to form a partnership for ninety minutes.

I was thinking about Nugent and suspect he scored most of his goals in his career up top with a partner. Whereas for us he’s had to play centrally in a 3 and he’s had to do too much running. That’s where Keith has failed in that whereas Vaughan was good in that role, Nugent obviously isn’t up to it.

the CBT situation drives me mad. Keith knows we’re struggling to score. CBT is electric in training and gets 3 minutes. What a joke

I agree generally, but I still suspect Hill had a big say in the January signings. All of them were Lancashire based players, with the exception of Kirby, which is his patch and doubtless where he has contacts.
