Those of us who are longer in the tooth might remember ‘Al’ Onyeali, a Nigerian who played part time for Rovers when he was studying electrical engineering in Birkenhead in 1960-61. 9 goals in 16 games under Peter Farrell. Walter Galbraith was not into part timers and hence his time was short. He was the first black player on Merseyside when such players were generally very rare. A bit different today! The South African winger Alfred Jananesson might have been a year or two before at Leeds. A bubbly character who had a successful career back in Nigeria.

I remember him well, Drwhoman, he had one of the hardest shots I ever seen, when he let fly, and the ball hit the cowsheds you would be showered in rust, from the roof, fast with a powerful shot, one of my favourite players at the time, used to hold my breath when he got the ball and ran at the goal, I used to run messages for neighbours to get the money to go to the game and it was worth it just to see Omyeali with the ball . Always wondered why Tranmere let him go, now I know why, Thanks for the memories.

Yes different times, drawhomah, still its nice to look back, Dave Hickson who could ever forget and Peter Farrell on the wing, would always try to nutmeg his opponent,, ever game I waited for Peter to nutmeg the full back and then crawl through the players legs to get to the ball, alas my desire never came to fruition. Good times and memories, sadly with moving to Wiltshire in the seventies and my sight deteriorating , I can no longer drive, so have to rely on my daughter or her partner to drive me to games, so my visits to grounds are seldom, I am afraid, that is why I would like to give a big thank you to all the contributors on the sight for keeping me informed and up to date.
