An interesting meeting tonight, and I will try to summarise Palios's comments below:
He strongly implied (as we suspected) that our performance in the second half of the season kept Brabin in a job. He said that momentum is key in football and he hopes our form from Christmas onwards will be sustained. He said that stability was vital to the club: the rebuilding job last summer cost us in the first half of the season, whereas this close season we will probably only need to bring in five players. This suggests that he expects a number of the out of contract players to stay.
He said the wage budget this season would again be £1.1 million.
He commented that the major failings last season were the poor home form and the failure to score enough goals. In addition to signing Cook, we are trying to bring in players to provide goals in other areas of the pitch. He admitted that Norwood could not carry the burden for scoring goals on his own. He said we attempted to provide him with more support last season (presumably after Mangan went) but the players we brought in did not perform. He was honest enough to admit Higdon was a bad signing; Nigel Adkins gave him assurances about his qualities but the signing did not work out. He also claimed - which I disagreed with - that we had created enough chances last season, even at home (as many as Cheltenham apparently) and it was purely our conversion rate that was the problem. He did not seem convinced by the idea that we were too negative at home, but the signing of Cook seems to contradict this.
He listed a number of players he was impressed by last season - Davies, McNulty, Norwood, Mekki, Harris, Hughes - which suggest we might be trying to sign the later permanently.
In general, I got the impression he was aware of (most) of our failings last season and we were making real attempts to improve in these areas.
In terms of the general finances, he said the club made a £500,000 loss in the last financial year, down from £1 million the previous year, and we are now on a path to breaking even. He stated that the wage budget would have risen to £1.5 - £1.7 million had we been promoted last year. More of his comments will probably come back to me later.
I was also very impressed by Andy Parkinson, who I thought spoke well when discussing the youth system.
