Quality passer and taker of set pieces. Was gutted when he left (he shouldn't have). Delighted he'll be back, bit concerned that our central midfield trio total nearly 100 years between them tho'!

At least you know exactly what you are getting with McLaren, I agree the midfield will have a rather senior look to it however we are trying to build a squad, and he would be a useful addition to it. Agree with what someone said earlier he was quality when last with us and was shocked when he left. So with this in mind do we think Barnes is going to play 5 in midfield next season? He has shuker, allot, mahon, welsh, mclaren and possibly barnett if he resigns. Also any youngsters waiting to come through?

Yes, looks like a radical 0-4-5-2 formation next season. Assuming of course we can actually field 11 players ;-)

This latest round of nonsense is the most fun I've had as a Tranmere supporter for years, some of the posts on here lately have had me chuckling, especially the 'Laurel and Hardy' analogy. I just keep picturing Barnes and Macca in bowler hats and bow ties running into each other on the touchline.

I always thought Mclaren was very overrated. Flattered to deceive. "Mr. Set Piece Specialist" with his Micky Mellon esque floating corners and can only ever remember him scoring one free kick (Crewe away). Found his level at League 2 with Bradford (where he has failed to impress according to both fans and manager). Beautiful, sweeping sideways passes - not much else.

Not sure why we bothered. Assume McAteer had a big say in this one.

I tend to agree with SonkORLY? on this. He was non-descript in the 1st season and with hindsight think it was Jennings workrate that made him look good in his 2nd. Again puzzled why a 2 year deal offered. While we may have a midfield that can pass, tacklers & pace are in short supply.

To be fair, Kay and Jennings weren't possessed with the greatest pace, so I dont think we'll miss that too much. I'd prefer to have some creativity in midfield, something we've been lacking for a while. We have that in Mahon and Mclaren whilst Allott can provide the more Jennings-like workhorse performance. I think we've done OK here.

ANOTHER midfielder though. I think he's not a bad player, albeit he's getting on a bit (so much for Barnes' youthful squad) but it's defence and goalkeeper where we really need players coming in.

Would like to see you younger players coming in, maybe the younger players we already have being given a chance. And why is it that we're bringing in and being linked with players who already played for us? It'll be like rolling back the years with Mahon, Moore and McLaren all ex-players, in the CURRENT team! So much for the scouting system.

I'd love all three of them (in their day) back to be honest! All class players in their own eras. I think time when we had top players like those is over, hopefully we'll get some good young lads coming through.

Wish we'd take a look at some younger players to be honest. McLaren, Allot and Mahon are all in their thirties, and Barnes said we're gonna have a young squad??? I don't get it really. I presume we'll be fielding some Liverpool youngsters at some point on loan.

I said on here last week that the only players we were being linked with were those that Barnes and/or McAteer had played with. So I shouldnt be surprised about McLaren. But I am! I liked him first time round - he isn't getting any younger but then again he was never the fastest.

If we are looking at ex-players of that era and we are short of a goalkeeper then I hear Gavin Ward is currently a free agent! :shock:
