    New manager appointed
Tranmere Rovers have appointed Darrell Clarke as the club’s new manager.

FA Cup first round

Arthur Goldstein it is! Gerry Keegan - possibly without a moustache ;) - was his defensive partner.

Holly Park is now beneath the Liverpool South Parkway bus/rail interchange but back then the station was still called Allerton. There’s a blue plaque in the interchange commemorating the time Puskas played at Holly Park in a charity match in the 60s, a game which pulled in a crowd of 10,000 with another 10,000 reportedly locked out!

Sadly nothing to commemorate Tranmere’s Cup win there!
Thanks. I might have even been at the Puskas game although a long time ago! I recall that in the 60s Souths had a former Liverpool junior, Dave Watson (another one!) on the right wing, who was mustard at Souths level. I think he went to Tranmere at least on trial at one point but never made it and returned. Jimmy Case was a funny one. He only played for Souths a few times before going to Liverpool. He never struck me as a young man who would have such a good career but what would I know! Souths always operated on a shoe string supported by the social club on the ground and were never able to compete financially with the non league giants of the time like Wigan. Sound familiar!

I never saw Jimmy Case play then, if I recall right Liverpool snapped him up when he was still adjusting to open age football. Hard as nails though.

Aldo was the one who got away. In his book he mentions that Kingy, in his first spell as Tranmere manager, tried hard to sign him but either Tranmere couldn’t afford the £3,000 transfer fee or the chairman didn’t fancy him! So instead he signed for Newport, whose manager was the scouser Len Ashurst. Ashurst’s brother worked alongside Aldo at the old British Leyland plant in Speke and also did some scouting. Probably the best 3 grand they ever spent.

Agree. The Ford plant at Hailwood was also a prized better paid job. On another South’s player. Jimmy Tansey, a good left back, son of the old Everton player. As did a number of other young men, he came out to Australia on the assisted passage scheme, and unlike some others he stayed. Australia was a different place then. Football was the sport of European immigrants, Greece, Italy etc. The winter games here were rugby league and Australian Rules. However, Jimmy prospered and played for Australia. The game is far more mainstream now helped by the global reach of the internet. We came in the mid 80s and it was just taking off then. To get the Rovers result on a Sunday am I had to ring a number in Perth WA! I think a local sports paper came out with short reports a few days later.
