    New manager appointed
Tranmere Rovers have appointed Darrell Clarke as the club’s new manager.

League Two Cambridge (4) V Rovers (2)

i stand to be corrected but seem to remember micky selling watson then buying paul lewis who wasn,t in the same class, regarding smallwood i thought what a signing!!!!!

I still believe the goalie situation is weird. Murphy won't be fully match fit I don't believe as he wasn't on the bench last week.
and to still be playing an untried inexperienced keeper.
as for the rest of the line up, we could play a back nine and still get beat.
can we pick up another good away result?

We certainly won't be signing an experienced keeper, that seems certain. Keeper fitness is different to outfield, he's not going to run out of energy unless we entice a true Alamo!

Two unrelated sources, McGee is being told to retire. Sad if true, we seem to finish them off a decade before the evergreen Joe!!
That is one of the reasons I was hoping for a full time goalkeeper signing, if McGee is injured and can not play then we are left with Joe who is in his forties and Barrett, who does not inspire confidence in me.

true KH we could also sign kane, haarland & mbappe up front and still struggle to score goals.

Think it was Mike Jackson who brought Lewis to us initially. Micky Mellon was back in charge when he recruited Ryan Watson. It was unclear exactly what the problem was, but Watson got sold to Salford after 6 months and ended up doing reasonably in his 3 years there. Bit surprised he hasn’t found another club. Lewis re-joined the next season.

I had the same view regarding Smallwood, but clearly was wrong.

Barrett has been at fault for a goal in each of our last two league games. He’s not good enough and surely there is a better option out there?
You would certainly think so but it looks like we are going to try and scrape by with what we have

Agree it is a surprise Watson hasn’t been snapped up. Was decent at Salford and Northampton I think in the past.

Micky went with Merrie and LOC after Watson got injured, then Foley was used as sub. So big signing wasn't getting used, his wages had to be recovered. The two went on to never score and Foley was released after proving quite effective.*
Re- the keeper unless we buy one where would you get anyone proven.?Barrett is just another not very young, unproven and presumably highly thought of. There's a pattern not a pretty one.
* subject to someone having better recall!

Very sad. That would be our two best keepers from the last ten years both retiring in their prime. And it took Scott Davies a long time to get over it.

To be fair, we cannot afford to sign another good L2 standard goalie on decent wages on a permanent deal until we know Luke McGee can no longer play - and we have the insurance money.

Watson wasn’t injured for a significant period. Merrie wasn’t trusted by MM that season hence we got Warrington loaned in, even though there was a greater need in central defence. Foley played there occasionally. Think we’d offered him another deal but Barrow offered him 2 year deal so he went to Cumbria

On the face of it this game is defo a home banker. However, if we're out of possession a lot and can contain them, it might be a chance for Jones to nick one on the break.
1-2 Rovers.

Those who obsess about our poor home form may get some relief in an away hammering, Crosby has a habit of making problems far worse, his drunken behaviour in the Crewe game and sitting on his hands until 75th minute last week being examples.
Daft line up could be 4-0, a competitive narrow defeat would be a grounding for weaker fixtures to come (eventually)

In the eighties, I went to a midweek away game at Cambridge to see Tranmere. It was extremely windy to the point of gale force winds. The type of storm that didn’t have to have a silly name attached to it in those days.

I cannot remember who was in the Tranmere team but I do remember the goalkeeper kicking the ball out from a goal kick, right up into the windy sky. He then turned around to walk back to the goal whilst Tranmere defenders just faced away expecting the ball to land somewhere centre field.

However, the ball got caught in the swirl and came back towards the Tranmere goal and the enterprising Cambridge forward noticed , turned and ran towards the goal by which time the Tranmere keeper had turned back around and, caught napping so to speak, was incapable of stopping the ball from hitting the back of the net.

The fact I cannot remember Tranmere scoring says a lot.

As for today. For the first time this season I can’t be bothered watching on Tranmere TV. Maybe that will bring them good fortune!
