On Sunday Newcastle WFC travelled to Merseyside to face their Tranmere Rovers counterparts. In a spirited performance United came away with a point but they felt they should have taken all three.

It was only a late equaliser that stopped the Mags returning to Tyneside victorious. Whilst the men's team don’t have a clue what team spirit is at the minute it seems, our lasses team put them to shame.

It was Newcastle who created the better chances in the opening period but they failed to break the deadlock in the first half. An injury to Leanne McGee just before the break saw the introduction of Stacy Crooks.

United continued to press and were rewarded when Linsday McCubbin powered home a close range effort following a terrific corner from Kelly Ridley. United then had chances to put the game to bed and secure the three points but three successive misses proved crucial.

In the dying moments of the match Tranmere’s Vicky Abbot scored a dramatic late equaliser for the hosts. The lasses were unlucky and can count themselves unfortunate not to come away from Merseyside with the wind.

That said, at least they managed to come away with something... which is more than can be said of their male counterparts that don the black and white shirts.

Newcastle WFC Captain Sarah Renton had this to say following the game:

"We feel as if it is two points lost having been in front, but we have given a really good team performance which is always good for confidence."

NUWFC Head Coach Rob Atkin added:

"I’ve been very pleased with the all round attitude and effort of the squad against Rovers, this is not an easy place to come and play, especially up the slope in the second half, but we have more than matched them from start to finish and I know which team is the more happier with just the one point."
