RLC, as often when we have had different opinions, I hope you the optimist are right and I the pessimist am wrong. But even with free vaccinations for all, we are struggling to control Covid. I doubt we’ll be anywhere near the end of it by May.

I don’t think we’ll be near the end of it BBTC but like normal flu we’ll learn to live with it like we do with winter flu. Of course it is the unvaccinated that are still around 80% of the hospital admissions…

But let’s not get into politics on this forum

Like most people that dont know how this all works. We are now at maximum testing and people cannot get a test.
The number of infections is doubling every other day, especially in towns and cities.
The capacity in hospiitals has been reduced since march last year.
The number of covid beds has been reduced.
The numbers of staff to work in the hospitals and front line especially as most gp surgeries cannot cope.
The numbers of staff have either left, retired or gone elsewhere. Not as many volunteers.
Understaffed, under funded, under pressure.
And finally, the staff who are still in hospitals are getting positive tests and have to isolate, even if they have had all jabs. Still not enough protection for those heroes.
In London last friday night half of the paramedic vehicles didnt operate due to illness and isolation. A quarter of hospital staff were off in London.
The unknown information of omicron is reaping the whirlwind. And it has come as usual at the wrong time. The spread is unstoppable now because of inaction. And stupidity.
And the reason is fundamentally the pound, and who makes the profits and the contracts of huge public money.
Huge numbers of people have suffered because of covid measures not being logical enough to public health and the private companies who were rewarded couldn't deliver on so many things. Unprepared and misinformation to undermine what was really happening in the nhs and government talking to american health insurance companies.
Privitisation to offset taxes paid by a relatively few influencial capitilists and brexiteers, libretines and foreign multinationals.
We are in deep trouble for a while now and because of the utter negligence and wishing for the best or trying to save our financial status, the death toll will rise because of lack of resources, a government so blind to see what is really happening, and endorsing public gatherings, and superspreading events. There are those who think they are immune or too healthy to get it. Even the wearing of masks, which should be universal, is an option now! OMG!
If you have a cold or symptoms of a cold or a bit of flu. How do you know its not covid? Because omicron is airborne and very infectious especially in those unjabbed and those who are susceptible to immune supressed viruses. And of course who have had lung issues previously or something akin to pneumonia, asthma or copd. The symptoms are similar.
As long as you have christmas and new years celebrations and go the footie, the darts, the racing and other parties, organised events. Pantomine, not the government but live stage shows, pubs, clubs, restaurants and other social events. We will discuss more restrictions in the New Year. FFS!
The coach companies in wales and scotland are looking for drivers because so many have organised trips to night clubs in England to see the New Year in. Go figure!

But , things could get worse, the parties in central London are going ahead legally this time and the champers and cheese can be enjoyed. While we still have a thousand deaths a week and the overall death rate in this year is four percent higher than pre covid. And over the past two years, never mind ten years, nurses pay has been reduced in real terms by twelve to twenty percent.

Happy new year hoping i dont need a hospital any time soon!

This post is so wrong on so many levels - we have to live with this virus and move on which is what our Government is finally and very belatedly doing - but given it is almost NY and as Sparky says we aren't doing politics ... Happy New Year to one and all on this forum!

I agree entirely with the last comment! I would only observe that if the unvaccinated would put side their spurious so called freedom then perhaps pressure on hospitals will be less. That said, the slightly depressing thing about it all is that there is not a lot of discussion about long covid that many people are getting! Follow sensible precautions and stay safe everyone!

The government's handling of the pandemic has been utterly irresponsible and inept from the beginning, and even now Johnson probably should be introducing tighter measures but is unable to do so because he is in hoc to his hard right backbenchers.

However, I think we probably are through the worst of the pandemic.

The problem with ”living with the virus” is that it’s interpreted by many as Carte Blanche to ignore restrictions, recommendations, the societal responsibilities we should all have and often promotes an insular outlook. Living with the virus also means dying with the virus. As somebody who works in health and social care supporting the most vulnerable in our society, it’s still a huge concern and continues to take it’s toll. The more we can do to minimise deaths, hospitalisation and serious illness the better. I do fear desensitisation and an increased prevalence of the attitude of “looking after number one” (this might extend to immediate family, but not beyond) with the irony being the ”looking after” increases the risk to all.
This topic isn’t exclusively politics, it’s life and death right now and is continuing to impact on loved ones, fellow fans and the sport we “love” and should surely have its place on here.

I basically agree, but in terms of football I think the current season will be completed, which was the original topic being discussed.

NP has just tweeted that we will know whether the Salford game is going ahead tomorrow morning when we get PCR test results.

Here's hoping.....

80% is a compelling statistic, do you have an official link to the breakdown of the hospitalisation figures ?

There was a report a few days ago on BBC news, over 85% of covid hospital admissions were the unvaccinated

Ten minutes Googling suggests the proportion of omicron hospitalisation cases which are unvaccinated is about 25%. Vaccination reduces the chances of being hospitalised by about two-thirds. These numbers are moving because the exposure of the most vulnerable to omicron is still quite low relative to the population at large.

Going back to football, if there are some teams like Barrow and Hartlepool who have avoided Covid up to now, it could take a while before all 24 teams are clear to play. Some teams who are unlucky with the fixtures and timing could face quite a backlog.

Boris has also said today that up to 90% of those in intensive care haven’t had a booster…

Anyway back for the football, as RLC says hopefully we’ll hear good news tomorrow about the Salford game

I think there will be a backlog for many teams so those with bigger squads may fair better as there’s going to be quite a few games played between now and the end of the season.

Just to add, my son was tested positive yesterday, omicron.
If you look at the list of details of the latest covid, the incubation period is two days, which puts him at the boxing day fixture. He was in the kop!
Very few had a mask on.

I have my suspicions that the young are spreading this variant.

On youtube, there is details of all the countrys important reported covid stats, we are in the top ten in every detail except jabs!
We are the only country where the statistics for hospital recovery is not published.

As always, the government cannot do what they promise and the effect of brexit, taxes and the super rich that dont want to pay their way, to go back to the thirties. And the majority of pressure on Boris is the number of foeigners and donors of the tory party.

Even in sport, politics is always in decision making.
Most of the owners of football clubs and a fair portion of players are foreign.
Where is the basics of brexit on foreigners or immigration.
You just cannot seperate the politics from sport.
The government decide many aspects of sporting life and where the money and grants go.
Isnt brexit going well?
How is it possible for English clubs to play in and travel in the EU?
And who decides who to give EU clubs the permission to play travelling to our independant country?

Dont answer it is a rhetorical political sport question.

A lot of interesting questions! It reminds me of the famous Donald Rumsfeld assertion. 'As we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns—the ones we don’t know we don’t know'! It is all a bit like that!
