we need to get back to doing it mark has said that is the way he wants to go getting young players then selling them on we need a manager who wants to play young talent and bring them on no point in having a manager who won't play young lads

Unfortunately, we haven't had any young lads break into the first team for years. Even if they did, we would lose them as we don't offer anything longer than a two-year contract at the moment. We mainly rely on free transfers and loanees. That works well for balancing the annual budget, but it would be nice to find another Dixie Dean, Steve Coppell or Aaron Cresswell.

yes it would as MP has stated that's the road he wants to go down to get them in young and sell them on but we need a manager who is willing to let them progress just have to look at Crewe to see how it works

Although we’ve not had any youngsters break through recently I always think there must be decent players say in their early 20s in non league who have potential. Some obviously don’t work e.g Darren Stephenson but the likes of Accrington have picked up a few from Southport and other local clubs or some in the welsh premier. Guess it depends if we have a decent scouting network but they would be relatively cheap and low risk

I agree, Sparky. But it needs a good scouting network of people who can judge a player's potential. Our recruitment record f these players when we were in the NL was diabolical. Dawson (twice), Stephenson, Almond, Rokka, Green, Alabi. I rest my case.

You could add George Waring to BBTC’s list. It surprises me of those named, the one who has found a place with a L2 club is Devarn Green at Scunthorpe.

Even those with potential won’t realise it if they don’t get a chance, yet when managers have the pressure ramped up by expectations of promotion, unless the player is truly exceptional, they understandably won’t take the risk.

I think the problem is that the top non league talents are picked off by Championship / League One clubs these days, often for fees in excess of £1 million which are completely out of the question for us (think of Peterborough in recent years). As a result, any signings we make from that level are gambles, the majority of which don't pay off.

Brentford's policy has been successful because they had consolidated in the Championship, with all the financial riches that brings. They have signed players from below for millions of pounds, and sold them on for tens of millions.

Yes, but I was only considering players signed from non- league clubs. George came from Stoke City.

Another problem we have about developing our youngsters is the lack of opportunity to play against experienced professionals. We have had no reserve team for years. For the past nine years we have been either chasing promotion or trying to avoid relegation, so every game has mattered. A mid table side can afford to blood youngsters in the final few games.

Not having an academy won't help either.
In the last decade only a few of the youth have made it and soon moved on.
The fact that there was more money to be earned at the likes of Warrington town than Rovers were offering, is a policy that has been in place even before MP closed the academy.
How on earth can we buy decent league players, with no policy on youth?
Even for the youth team, we have to recruit from other clubs to fill the squad.
And besides Ben, we had to bring in another keeper when Scott got injured.
We have had a poor season full of cast offs and loanees on short term contracts, and the First year pros never got a look in. Nor did Danny.

Blimey some names there take me back BBTC. Amond and Rokka in particular were a total waste. Dawson’s attitude was the issue apparently.

Dawson was in part let down by the club.
His partner was down south and he requested more time because of circumstances that he couldn't do at Rovers. He even offered to go out on loan, to the club that he went to anyway. He got himself in trouble with the club because he was distracted and things went downhill after that. So did his attitude on the pitch.

Dawson had attitude problems at every club he was at. I don't think he managed more than ten appearances anywhere.

Dawson was what you would call naive in how professional footballers attitude were expected.

They were the best of the play off sides and deserved to go up. However, it will be very tough for them if Adams leaves as expected.

Courtesy of a debatable penalty. I'd have preferred Newport to go up as they'll be the stronger side if Adams departs as expected.

From a selfish point of view, I agree. Plus the games against Newport are always terrible to watch.
