I am still not comfortable with Dawes getting it in the long term. I would only want him to get the job if the only other options are people like McGreal and Challinor. I would like to think the job is attractive to managers with greater credentials.

My worry is that we still know so little about Dawes. What happens when opposing teams counter the diamond formation we are using and he needs a tactical plan B ? We are in the honeymoon period now, but can he control the dressing room when form dips and he has to upset senior players by dropping them ?

There is only so much you can learn from a handful of games.

I'd be surprised if a new manager is in the hot-seat by the weekend, although some suggestion the interview process is underway.

Ferrier was ok and allowances can be made for the fact he's been absent for a while, but the fact the commentators mentioned his new hairdo as much as his football gives an idea of his impact.

just seen the highlights. the penalties were poor. smith looks poor and lacking in confidence. reminds me of that Italian player we had on loan,

Looking at the highlights, I thought Wigan were very unlucky. The DWR penalty shout led to our equaliser and Murphy was making ridiculous saves in normal time and in the shoot-out. As we know, when you are in a rut, all the luck seems to go against you. Not that I feel sorry for them. I'm just pleased our fortunes seem to have changed for the better.

I thought a draw was a fair reflection of the game as a whole. I had not appreciated that Wigan only made four changes from their team on Saturday, which emphasises both the weakness of their squad due to their financial problems and the strength of ours this season.

Good point, RLC. I had not realised we were playing virtually a full-strength L1 side.

I thought there was a bit of evening up by the referee, didn't give the DWR penalty shout, which although not nailed on, many would award. However after the Woolery goal, it looked like DWR was pushed over in the build-up to Wigan's second.

Overall, thought Wigan made more effective use of the ball and had more goal attempts than Rovers, though hadn't appreciated that they were not greatly altered from their team at the weekend. The fact that Rovers were operating with so many changes and Ray and Walker-Rice and Banks were struggling in their new roles contributed to that, so grateful we clung on and go through via spot-kicks.

Is it knock out from now one? Last 8 in the northern areas or something?

Bit harsh Boz. I thought he did quite well when he came on and I those commentators bang on about what they had for breakfast more than they do the football.

i didn’t see the game but Dawes was fairly complimentary about Ferrier.

that said I still don’t think we can rely on Morgan in the long term: His injury record isn’t great and I can see why there are question marks around his attitude at times. On his day he is unplayable but sadly he doesn’t have his day often enough.

less of a priority perhaps but I still don’t think a front 3 of Vaughan, Payne and Ferrier is enough. Smith hasn’t pulled up any trees since he joined altho hasn’t had much service. With all our attacking midfielders Will be interesting if any new manager wants 2 out and out strikers up top.

I think we have a number of attacking midfielders who can score goals - Lloyd, Morris, Kahn, CBT, Woolery - so the lack of a top quality partner for Vaughan does not really concern me. There are plenty of goals in this squad.

I thought Ferrier was poor last night which was to be expected after such a long absence, but I am not his greatest fan anyway. There are rumours that his injury was self inflicted and he has been a problem off the pitch, and I personally don't think his performances justify the hype.

Without wanting you all to get too excited, here is the schedule. There were 48 league clubs and 16 U-21s in the group stages. Half of those have now been eliminated, so we are into the last 32. The next two rounds are regionalised, but the draw is national from the quarter0finals onwards.
Round of 32- 8/9 December 2020
Round of 16- 12/13 January 2021
Quarter-Finals- 2/3 February 2021
Semi-Finals- 16/17 February 2021
Final- 14 March 2021

The money from this competition is useful in the current climate, but it is still dangerous and should not exist in its current format (as Project Big Picture demonstrated).

As a result, I can't get excited about our progress in it.

Agree RLC and too many games for all players not just the Premier Leaguers.

I find it incredibly exciting! The though of having a big SWA day in watching a buffering screen with dodgy commentary from Wembley? Erm, maybe not ... :(

I was making allowances for Ferrier's returning from injury or other absence. He tends to run down blind alleys and there was a ball slung across their box early in the second half, which he made no effort to try and connect with. Don't recall any efforts on goal. He's had some good games as Sparky mentions, but not on a consistent basis
