A well deserved victory for Rovers.
The first half was poor. I thought we were too deep as a team and allowed Scunthorpe too much easy possession high up the pitch, and we did not look comfortable in the 442 formation. Whether Payne was injured or not, I thought he failed to hold the ball up in the first thirty minutes and we looked more comfortable when we reverted to the 451 formation. Lewis was actually excellent played just behind Vaughan, and his ability to break into the box and support the striker was something we have not seen much from the midfield this season.
I thought the second goal was the real turning point, as we relaxed and played some good football in the last half an hour and should have scored further goals. Defensively we were superb throughout, even in the poor first half, and to collect the number of clean sheets we have so early in the season is impressive. Scunthorpe never looked like scoring.
Individually, I thought Clarke and Ridehlagh were solid at the back, and O'Connor was great going forward and defensively. Spearing protected the back four well in the periods when we were under pressure in the first half. Kahn had a good second half, and Lewis had his best game for us so far.
However, man of the match has to be James Vaughan, not just for his goals but also the energy he showed in leading the line. He would have had a hat trick as well, if Manny had left that cross for him in the second half.
Onwards and upwards.
