BBTC, Fylde have the option to extend Rowe's contract so I don't think he will be leaving them

Our policy in recent years has been to offer one- or two-year deals. The last three-year contracts went to Jake Kirby and Cole Stockton, which did not work out too well, But two-year ones do mean we risk losing players like Nors and Cookie. The player always seems to win in the end. For example, we had Ollie Norburn on a two-year, but he left after one, although we did get a fee for him.

For a club of our size and resources, deals longer than two years are generally too much of a risk.

When Norwood signed his last contract he was not even a guaranteed starter at National League level and was sometimes behind Andy Mangan in the pecking order. Given that we had the ambition of reaching Leagues Two and One in the near future, levels that Norwood had never played at before, it would have been too much of a risk to offer him a very long contract. We did not know how good he was, or how he would adapt to a higher level. We can't simply stockpile players on decent wages in the way Premier League clubs can.

Of course we would offer Norwood all the riches in the world now, but hindsight is 20-20.

The three year contracts offered to Kirby and Stockton were completely daft and were the brainchild of Jeremy Butler, which says it all.

It’s quite hard pitching contract length in the modern era. Would have been a big gamble giving Norwood 3 years for the reasons RLC states and while I thought he’d cope with the demands of league football, has done much better than that. We gave Eddie Clarke 2 years, which was fair for an untried youngster, but as soon as he showed his ability wouldn’t talk contract extensions and was off. Hasn’t played for Fleetwood this season, don’t know what fee we got for him in the end and can’t help wondering if he regrets making that move now.

Despite the option to extend, Rowe may want to move on and have a stab at playing at a higher level. There have been doubts expressed on here as to whether he’d be good enough, certainly a more limited player than Nors.

Rowe is 29 so he may well think it best to stay at Fylde where he is presumably paid well on a NL basis. Yes - you wonder about Clarke. A strange move - you wonder who was advising him. I hope Barton has not been educating him on the 'joys' of gambling!

Scunthorpe relegated and have 22 players contracted for next season! That has to be the nightmare scenario and must give the new manager little room for manoeuvre. I've no idea on the individual contract length but there must be some longer ones in there. Arguably all 22 were too long!
