Signing ex-Everton goalie Iain Turner caught me by surprise. It's a shrewd move. We now have two experienced keepers and can afford to let Pilling and Ramsbottom out on loan to get experience and match practice. Now we have no reserve team and they are too old for the youth team, it's the best solution. It may even be cost neutral.

Although I have often been baffled by some of GB's signings and statements, I must say it's all beginning to make sense. He has a clear and coherent strategy, which was lacking under Micky Adams.

Agree BBTC. Turner is highly experienced and will be a good alternative if Davies shows any weakness. We just need the forwards to get their goal scoring boots on. Margetts to start I hope.

Davies showed plenty of weaknesses today:(

While Turner signing is a good move, surely a bit unbalanced to have four pro keepers and not one right-back on our books?

Agree re the right back Boz. What really was the problem with Holmes? As regards the goalkeepers, GB has said that the two young guys will be sent out on loan.

I don't think anyone outside the club really knows the true position with Danny Holmes, though it's clear that it wasn't just down to money. He was apparently watching the game yesterday. However, when he left, we should have got a replacement in. Brabin gives the impression anyone can play there, sticking Maynard in for the last 15 minutes and suggesting Ihiekwe might have featured if he hadn't picked up a knock.

In fairness, he does not give this impression at all. Hogan has been the first choice right back in the majority of pre-season games. Obviously the manager will want to use pre-season to see which players can do a job in other positions when squad numbers are limited (Maynard has played out wide, for example, as has Norwood; Ridehalgh has been used on both the left and right sides of midfield; and so on.....).

Seems we're never going to agree on the right-back issue. Hogan in his own mind is a central defender and quite a decent one. He does make a fair stab at the right-back role, but looks more assured in central defence. While it doesn't look like happenening, my preference would be to sign or loan a specialist right-back.

Boz, I think it would be better to use the players he has. Whoever plays there might fair quite well against the opposition. If it becomes a problem, GB always has the option to look at bringing someone in. Not kicked a competitive ball yet.
