Good point ref Maynard Boz. Given the limitations of the other options in terms of the offensive aspect of the role, Maynard indeed may do better if GB decides to go three at the back with wing backs. I was probably harking back to mine, and others wish for a specialist right back, who one would hope, would have qualities suitable for a wing back role. might just stumble on something with Maynard in a different role - part of a GB master plan:)

Mate, I bang on here regularly about the need for a specialist right-back too and agree with what you're saying.

So what specialist right backs are on the market right now? Bearing in mind that quality is important

Are you suggesting there are no unattached specialist right-backs out there, capable of performing to a competent level at L2? I don't think McNulty has played at a higher level than that.

I think longer term over the season if everyone was fit, GB would stick with 4-4-2. Maynard would I am sure be a decent right wing back, but where would one of our best players in Dawson, when fit, play? Certainly not left wing back as he can't defend.
His best position is an out and out winger and as GB is a big fan of Mekki, I think we'll stick with 4-4-2 unless injuries permit otherwise.

As for a RB, I still think Sutton isn't too bad at this level. There will be others out there but GB obviously doesn't see it as a priority. Although as I've said before, Danny Holmes is currently warming the Newport bench and will be for a while with their new manager in place and a great win at Wycombe last night.

Not sure I am understanding your comment. Either GB disagrees with those suggesting we need a specialist right back or there are no unattached ones he thinks cut the mustard.

I tend to think the former. Brabin has generally recruited players of a Conference/L2 pedigree and while I'm not a football agent with knowledge of who's available, am a little sceptical if it's suggested there are no unattached right-backs of that calibre out there.

I think both of Mal's statements are valid: Brabin does not think there are any right backs available that are better than what we already have. No point bringing in players if they don't improve us.

I would guess he also understand that right backs, while it is always nice to have an outstanding one, don't win you the league. Centre forwards and centre halves do, hence his signings this week.

Rather than obsessing somewhat unhealthily about one position, I think Palios and Brabin deserve praise for the players they have brought in this season. We have good quality in most areas, something that is very difficult to achieve at any level and contrasts starkly with our shambolic recruitment of previous years.

We haven't got a specialist right-back!

Teams rather than individuals win leagues.

The end of the season will show if the Palios/Brabin have got it right or not. I'm currently sitting very firmly on the fence in regard to that one.

Meanwhile, Marcus Holness has apparently made available for loan.

A 'specialist' right back would not necessarily be better in that position than Sutton, Ihiekwe and the rest. Would you want Luke Darville or Michael Kay at right back just because they are 'specialist' ?

So you don't think Hogan, McNulty, Hill, Sutton, Maynard, Harris, Jennings, Mangan, Norwood, Dawson and Taylor-Fletcher constitute a team then ? Suggesting that 'teams' win the league regardless of the quality of individual players is a meaningless statement.

The right back obsession just smacks of finding something to complain about. For the first time in years we are signing good players, just enjoy it.

Nowhere have I said that any old specialist right-back will do, simply that my belief is that there are right-backs of equal calibre to those we have recruited in other positions out there.

You could have a collection of the eleven most talented footballers in the world, but if they don't work together, they won't win anything. I don't take the view that it's only centre forwards and centre halves that win you leagues, far more important is how the players work together as a unit.

The last game that I went to was Barrow and there was plenty to complain about in that one. It's good the way that Brabin has addressed the lack of on-field leadership by recruiting a character like McNulty, while someone with the ability of GTF being available for at least a couple of months, while we're missing Mangan has got to be a positive. However, I remain baffled as to the manager's view on using makeshift right-backs. Sorry if that annoys you, but that's my take on things.

.

I did not say it was, just that they are much more important than right backs. Which they are.

GTF worked pretty well with the rest of the unit on Saturday. I expect McNulty to do likewise.

I think having Sutton at right back is adequate at this level especially now we have a born leader in the centre and more quality up front. The quality is there, we just need to be more consistent. I'm hoping this will come with GB recent signings as we have more quality, experience and leadership in the team.

GBs remarks reported in the Echo suggest that Ihiekwe's going to only get selected at right-back.

Or hopefully not selected at all!
