A terrific performance by Rovers. It is a pity we did not win the game by two or three goals as we deserved to, as the scoreline does not tell the full story. We worked incredibly hard without the ball to restrict Exeter to scraps, with their first shot on target coming in the 94th minute. By contrast, we hit the woodwork twice and forced two great saves from their keeper. Exeter dominated possession for long periods, but in non-threatening areas, whereas we looked dangerous whenever we went forward, particularly on the counter attack.
I thought both strikers set the tone for the performance with their constant pressing and harrying. I was made up Elliott got his goal and, yes, Jolley impressed once again. He has got good strength for such a slight player, and is able to carry the ball and show good trickery at times. However many goals he scores in the remainder of the season, I think he is the real deal.
It is difficult to pick a man of the match as there were so many good displays, but I would give it to Morris, who was instrumental in our best moves. Defensively we look much more solid with the partnership of Clarke and Davies restored, and I thought MacDonald had his best game since returning from injury. I don't care what many people say, we look far better defensively when a fit Spearing is patrolling in front of the back four. He is a more intelligent footballer than O'Connor.
Onwards and upwards. Three points off the automatic places with a game in hand, coming into the festive period. A good place to be.
