Not seen it but apparently in his press conference today Micky said Doohan signed a 3 year extension at Celtic before joining us on loan.

The Doohan situation is a strange one. If that's true then clearly Celtic rate him. Yet by the summer he'll have spent 4 seasons out on loan, and still appears to be no higher than 5th choice there. I guess having him under contract means he'll attract a fee if we (or anyone else) want to sign him. He had two seasons on loan at the same club in Scotland so there's no reason to think we wouldn't be able to get him here again next season

He would be good choice for next season along with a second keeper to sign permanently

Strange. Presume Jones has gone and he’s possible bench cover if one of Ross or Joe is unavailable.

Quite a lot of transfer/loan activity going on in L2 atm. Plenty, including our new keeper, who I'm unfamiliar with, but Harry Charsley, who's a local lad and looked quite decent playing for Mansfield against us has gone to Vale, with the Stags getting another Burton old boy in Kieran Wallace replacing him. Devante Rodney, who could be a handful on his day leaving Vale for Walsall.

In addition, Omar Bogle, who was allegedly a target of ours a few months ago, has left Doncaster for Hartlepool. That looks a good signing for Pools.

Can't work this one out - was he already a student at the Academy as the report says he will keep training att he Campus? Or were we simply evaluating him already? Either way as Bigmart says his contract is until the end of the season only so what's the point of that? Yes may have an option on him I suppose for the following season also but normally we would say that?

It’s a very strange one on the face of it. I’ve never heard of a player being signed for six months and then loaned back for the whole of that time. It sounds too philanthropic even for Rovers.

Yes, we must have an option for at least another year and will continue to monitor his progress. If so, it’s a potentially good move with virtually no risk attached.

I'm sure the agreement will be that we can recall him at any time if Ross or Joe are unavailable. That makes perfect sense in that we have a back up keeper who is getting regular game time, and possibly training with us.

Players on youth loans still train with the parent club five days a week.

I think it is effectively a six month trial. We will observe his progress in training, but he will still get regular match practice to help his development. At the end of the six months we will decide if he is worthy of a longer contract. It is a sensible arrangement.

It is not uncommon for EPL / Championship clubs to sign young players and immediately loan them back to the selling club.

Thinking about it, unsure if the loan regulations permit us taking him back for the occasional game. So if one of the main keepers gets injured presume we’ll opt for no keeper on the bench as Micky did once or twice earlier in the season. A strategy that makes me a little uneasy.

We will be able to recall him if necessary

I've done some research on Mateusz Hewelt. It's a strange one.

1. Polish born, he grew up in Ireland so probably has an Irish passport enabling him to work in the UK post Brexit.
2. He was on Everton's books as a youth, but returned to Poland in 2018 to play in the Polish Second Division for two seasons.
3. He scored a last minute equaliser in one game.
4. Returning to the UK to play part-time for Bamber Bridge in the NPL seems strange, unless he is still ambitious to make a pro career in England.
5. At 25, he is not a youth player, by any means. Time is not on his side.
6. I think this is a risk-free punt at unearthing a useful keeper rather than signing a back-up for Ross and Joe. Mateusz surely can't yet be ready to play in the EFL straight from the NPL.
