Next up it’s a trip to the north east coast to take on the monkey hangars. After a positive start to the season under Dave Challinors stewardship, results have fallen away since he left for Stockport and they currently lie in 15th in league two. They also have the worst goal difference (-10), outside the bottom 4 and despite leading 2-0 at Mansfield on Boxing Day, pools conspired to lose the game 3-2. Hopefully rovers can take advantage of what you would think must be low levels of confidence at the moment.
No stand out names but attacking right back Jamie sterry impressed at PP earlier this season when I thought the visitors were only a decent striker away from getting a win.

Hard to predict the line up with the covid situation but whatever the prognosis for Maynard surely the game comes too soon. If Jolley is still missing then Micky has a decision to make whether to go back to 5 in midfield or play someone like Feeney as a makeshift striker alongside nevitt

Prediction: if we can keep another clean sheet then another 3 points is on offer.

I think this game is trickier than it first appears. Hartlepool actually have a very good home record, the third best in the division, and are difficult opponents on their own ground. However, as Sparky says, their recent form is poor and they have struggled since the appointment of Graeme Lee, who is yet to win over their supporters. If we win the game we move into second place, as Northampton's match has already been postponed. Quite an incentive.

I think we will have no choice but to revert to a 451 formation with Nevitt up front, and Hawkes or Morris playing just behind him. If Cogley is still unavailable, Ryan Watson will probably start the game in midfield.

Let us hope there is not a late flurry of cases and the game goes ahead.

I think this will also be quite a tricky one. I thought they played really well against us at home and whether they are the same team remains to be seen but I would certain be cautious as they will want to get back to winning ways. Having said that, we are enjoying our best spell this season and confidence is obviously high so while I think we can go there and get a couple of goals, we need to defend well and keep it tight, then hopefully we can come away with some points to keep us in the top three.

Glatzel maybe on the bench tomorrow, if not then probably against Salford. I fancy we will win 2 1

Playing 1 up front hasn’t worked, particularly when Nevitt’s been that lone striker and so isolated. While Burton was on the bench v Barrow, it’s unlikely he’ll see any action. Perhaps playing Watson in a more advanced role? The comments by MM re Glatzel suggest at best he’ll only be ready for a slot on the bench.

This will be a difficult game, if it goes ahead and I would be content with a point.

We won a number of games earlier in the season with Nevitt operating as a lone striker. It is not that bad an option for one game away from home.

What happens in a months time, if its still the same?
The league has to carry on were possible and as many games that can go ahead do go ahead.

I think things will have settled down in a couple of weeks. The players who have had Covid will have some kind of immunity against the new variant, and the number of positive tests will fall.

I’m less certain that the season will finish. Rest assured that thanks to playing and winning our last match, we are still third in the table on PPG. ;)

As further restrictions have not been imposed, I don't see any reason why the season would be abandoned.

At worst it will go behind closed doors, the season will finish
The reason so many games are being postponed is because players have been exposed to Covid. Emptying the grounds of fans won’t affect this. The only way to prevent players getting Covid is to isolate them with team management, coaches, physios etc. until the season ends. This would cost clubs a fortune and be impractical if they have no income.

Yes, omicron will die out eventually but nobody knows when. It is likely to be replaced by a new variant, pi or omega or whatever, just as omicron took over from delta.

I’m not saying all this will happen but I think it’s more likely than things returning to normal early next year. Let’s hope for the best but be prepared for the worst.

However, Omicron is less dangerous than several previous variants, and as the majority of the population has now been vaccinated and received boosters, it is likely that the impact of future variants will be progressively less significant as the months go by.

The majority of clubs at this level only have about twenty players, many of whom have been already infected by Omicron. So unless it is possible to be reinfected by the same variant, the number of infections and isolations will reduce in the coming weeks.
