Port Vale signed James Wilson after his release from Salford could well be a good signing.

The reason we signed players later last summer was due to the pandemic and not knowing for sure if the season would start on time or not and also the salary cap both which are not in the equation this time around.
Wilson did not do much at Salford, although Clarke may get more out of him at Port Vale.

We did not sign players in any numbers until July / August last season, so it is still very early by comparison. There have been relatively few deals at this level so far, and a lot of the better players are probably weighing up several options.

I was thinking surely with the current climate e.g clubs still don’t know if fans will be allowed in to games which could affect budgets, players will be less willing to take a risk by wanting more money or looking elsewhere, any may just want to stay put if offered something at their current club

Reported on Twitter, we are about to sign Tom Davies from Bristol Rovers on a free. He finished last season on loan at Barrow. Anyone remember him?
He’s a local lad and a defender, aged 29 with experience of two recent promotions from League Two.

Mellon tried to sign Davies previously, I think in the summer when we ended up with Jay McEveley. He seems a decent player but quite injury prone.

Not the useless one that plays for Everton? :sneaky:

A few promotions on his CV but doesn’t look like he’s contributed much to them as he’s not played many games. I guess if all of Manny, Ray, Ellis, Nelson are leaving (and potentially but hopefully not Clarke), then we do need 3 new centre backs, unless rides converts to one

It is suggested a current player we offered a contract to is leaving tomorrow.

He has won promotions from this level with Portsmouth and Coventry and looks a very good signing. Hopefully he can stay injury free and play plenty of games.

Not bad credentials from the past and can only hope we can keep him fit, as serious injuries to both knees have seriously limited his appearances in recent seasons, and unlike Peter Clarke he is not noted for contributing much in the goal scoring arena. Can understand the logic of only a 1 year contract.

Solid signing if he can stay fit.

Good signing as a squad player, potential for more if he can overcome the fitness issues.

It’s a big if given his record. But fairly low risk as only a one year deal. I remember that full back we signed not too long ago, ex Preston I think, who was decent but always injured

Callum Woods ? I think Davies has had one really big injury, rather than a succession of injuries, so hopefully lower risk.
