Since the decision to prioritize the elite youngsters, the roles of clubs is to produce better technical skills and experience of being part of the club's ethos. The decision to close our academy was because the parachute payment for the academy funds was ending, it was our third year in the NL. At that time it deemed to be an unnecessary cost to fund.
Because we bring in other clubs rejects to make the youth squad full, at fifteen-sixteen they have not had the benefits of playing together with the other first or second years previously. The more promising kids would always be pushed a year up to make them better equipped to play against older and bigger players.
Last summer was the first time that a youth keeper was not given a first year contract in many years, last decade produced year upon year of keepers.
We made money on a few youngsters before it closed. Shamal George for example.
We seen many of the last full u16s, playing for clubs like Marine, Southport, Warrington.
It is understandable that our production line of good players has suddenly ground to a dribble with the odd youngster getting a contract. But they never stay that long.
Most of the reasons, is lack of football, wages and knowing that they will never be first choice. We only resumed, reserve team football in the last year of MMs season. And that was really poor and disrupted. No cup competition for the ressies..
Last two seasons The youth league results were poor and sadly lacking in class, the technical and the basics were sadly lacking. There is a huge chasm of talent we used to bring through continually. I can't see it changing regardless of what MP says.
It would take years of a new academy to produce players good enough for league footie.
This is made worse by not having the continuous numbers of good pros, players that are given more than a one year contracts. We need stability, a plan to be forwarded thinking, a spine good enough to be competitive and build your team around. Obviously all these players will have to be brought in. There are a lot of scousers in league one and two. And of course quite a few good players who came through our school of excellence. Max Power, Will Vaulks, to name two.
We need a rethink on the club's policy on getting children in and development of the club's future. An academy!
