I wasn't suggesting Mellon's recruitment is terrible - far from it but it isn't the clincher either IMO when we think of the likes of Ponticelli, Alabi, Miller and Ray who as our alleged highest salary spent much of last season benched by MM.
Be that as it may I do agree with RLC that the timing makes it difficult to bring in Challinor if we have to wait another month. I have read elsewhere that Challinor has an automatic exit clause in his contract to a team in the EFL however he would I am sure want to see the season out plus it may also make him out of our price range!
Just one other thought but I also wonder if the Indonesian investors are having much input into the process?

I think the clincher with Mellon is simply his record of promotions at several clubs, however they were achieved and with whatever personnel. l would guess he must be the investor's first choice for that reason.

To have a rookie manager whether it be Dawes or someone else to me is a non starter with the size if the rebuild we require

Micky has 5 promotions I think on his CV. Any league two club would be desperate to have him as he knows what it takes to get success. Yes some of his signings haven’t worked out but every manager is the same as Mart says. Look at what Hill brought in during January, all those loannees Micky Adam’s brought in etc. It’s a gamble especially at our level as it’s not often you can bring in proven players.

Please please Micky come back.

Unless we do get a manager that can rebuild the squad, I am still not convinced that recruitment will be any different apart from MM. Hence the revolving door of managers.
So who is doing the recruitment?
Can we actually get a manager within budget that will be good enough?
Worrying times.

Too many of them after over 50 years!
It’s true Mellon managed to gain promotion through playoffs and I am grateful for that. However, if he does take hold of the reigns again, I hope he is given a budget to bring in players who can contribute to a less boring style of play. Being effective is good but we need entertaining football. No idea if it is true but some Dundee United fan sites had comments about their team playing too negatively. Brabinesque!

We are a lot more financially stable now and will have a competitive budget.

I would not say the style of football was boring when Mellon was here previously, even in periods when we were struggling. If anything I would say the reverse was true: he was always attack minded even in games when the opposition were greatly superior, such as the Spurs and United cup ties.

Dundee United had just been promoted from the Championship to the SPL and were competing with clubs with far greater resources, so it would be no surprise if they had to set up relatively cautiously.

Dundee United also had financial problems the ayers and management had to take a pay cut during the season which can't really have helped things.

Boring?!? Cookie and Nors up front in the national league. Nors playing that lone front man role perfectly in league 2. I was never bored watching us and as RLC correctly points out, Dundee fans are deluded if they thought they could get promoted to the SPL and play nice open attacking football. Maybe if they had it would have been nice to watch but they may have gone straight back down.

Even if it was boring football...which I don’t think it was....it was winning football. Certainly the trips to Wembley will long live in the memory plus FA Cup excitement. Perhaps in league one it wasn’t easy to watch but two promotions on the bounce left us exposed at that level

The club has had its assets re-valued.
We are financially sound because of the assets.

The running costs and necessary budget allocations will be reduced, because of covid and the loss in revenue due to no crowds.
To bring MM back, it will take a quite big salary, then the total rebuilding of the squad to get to a competitive standard to achieve promotion.

Why change direction after the last two seasons of reducing costs and hoping for a hand out from the premiership?

Money talks, I can't see many decent players will be attracted to the club unless we hike up wages and land a 'really good manager'.

We don't need a great manager, but a lucky one!

We are due to make a small profit this season, the budget will not be reduced, we had a pretty competitive budget this season and what most would agree was a good squad for this level.

MM had to take a pay cut at dundee u do I doubt he will be on a big salary

I don’t think it would have been that big. Dundee United’s gates in normal times would be comparable to ours. He probably got a decent pay rise to join them, but after the pay cut I expect he was on a salary that Rovers could now match.

I think he left because he felt he could take Rovers no further on the budget available and the potential for European football that was on offer must have been enticing. He may see if he can get another gig in the SPL. However, Rovers is now a more attractive proposition than it was a year ago. The club is financially sound and with so few players under contract, he could pick his own squad for next season.

We are now competitive for players, I would imagine we could afford a decent salary for Micky, but what is his relationship with Mark and would he want to come back?

I'd say his chances of another SPL gig are very limited. It's only a 12-team league and the only vacancies are at Celtic and at Ross County, a small club punching above its weight but based 150 north of Dundee. Many of the managers in post there are recent appointments (Aberdeen, Livingston, Hibs, Motherwell), doing well (Rangers, St Johnstone) or have just brought teams up (Hearts & Dundee). I really don't think he was up there long enough to make a lasting impression

We will have a competitive budget next season. We are in a stable position financially due to the work Palios has done in the last five years and the recent Indonesian investment, not because of hand outs or desperately cutting costs.

Alan Nixon has Tweeted that Mellon is a candidate, Challinor was a candidate, we were interested in Dawes, but interestingly there is also another name being considered who has not been mentioned by our supporters yet.
