Gutted. Was relying on his goals for next season. Big summer of recruitment ahead.

Too many of them after over 50 years!
if true, at least it forces the issue as regards finding a striker who actually will have attempts at scoring. whether that comes from a change of tactics and training for those we already have on the books or whether they manage to bring in a natural scorer of James' quality remains to be seen.

Perhaps we can only find competent strikers called James (or maybe Andy now and again)? Who do we know called James who is currently out of contract ;0)

Vaughan never gave less than his all and will be sadly missed, shame we didn't get to see more of him bit wish him all the best for the future.

With the size of the rebuilding job it's imperative we get the right manager in preferably sooner rather than later.

A shame as on his day he was very good but that wasn’t too often. I sometimes thought was he one of those players who struggled to last a full 90 minutes. He always tried his best though so wish him luck. Will be interesting where he ends up

I thought it was down to lack of fitness and with a full pre-season behind him might be worth a year. Wonder if the new manager to be has had a say in the matter.

Some suggestion on other sites (could be rubbish), that he was offered a new deal but turned it down

Agree with the sentiments regarding James Vaughan, until he joined Rovers I hadn't appreciated how much work he did all over the park and one of the hardest working players I've seen in a Rovers shirt as well as a great goal-scorer. It sounded like a combination of physical and mental factors that led him to hang up his boots. A bit surprised the way the announcement came about, just from the player initially, although it is now on the website. I hope James can go on to succeed with the plans he touched on in that parting interview.

Danny Lloyd seemed to have fitness issues, though was pulled on occasion by Keith Hill when he seemed to have plenty left in the tank. Probably expecting a bit more than he ultimately managed with Rovers and it will be interesting to see where next.

All the best to Danny Lloyd. You could not fault his effort but, aside from his first four or five appearances, I did not think he was quite up to it and seemed to lack quality when it mattered, perhaps down to fitness issues as suggested above.

You know, the more I think about it, the more I realise what a good squad we had. On their day, they could all play. The shame is that so many had frequent off days. With the right level of fitness, attitude and organisation (i.e. a decent manager), we could have walked League Two. It was potentially the best squad we had assembled in years and Jacko and Hill sadly blew it. It will be really interesting to see who gets offered a deal and of those who accepts one.

We had just five players under contract for next season. One has retired, one has a long-term injury and one is not yet ready for the first team. Only Calum and Jay are signed up and ready to to play next August.
