EFL Bail Out

I see that the EFL have accepted $50m from the Premier League to help L1 and L2 clubs. Championship clubs have to make their case individually. I am not sure how much we will get but it all helps! It is reported that close to a dozen clubs could go under without this support.

Not seen the figures per club & dont know if it will be evenly spread amongst the clubs or not.

Originally, I heard that the EFL was insisting on the cash being allocated according to need. This sounds good until you realise that clubs who overspent would be baled out while well run clubs like ours would get nothing. I think giving clubs the same money would be fairer, with L1 getting more as their salary cap is bigger. That would help all clubs without unlevelling the playing field.

That would make sense so I wouldn't bank on it happening

I think that they should share the cash in proportion to home attendance figures. That is a more realistic reflection of revenue lost and is not subjective.

I think it should just be shared equally among all the clubs in a particular division, with higher payments going to the Championship and League One as BBTC suggests. The clubs with bigger attendances have greater resources to cope with the current crisis, or at least should have.

Rescue package sounds like it has been agreed.

Details below from the EFL website.

Thoughts?
  • A £30million grant to be paid immediately from the Premier League to EFL Clubs for distribution based on lost gate receipts in respect of the 2019/20 and 2020/21 Season.
    • Each Club will receive a minimum payment of £375,000 in League One and £250,000 in League Two.
    • The remaining £15m to be distributed using a lost gate revenue share calculation, which will be approved by both the EFL and the Premier League.
  • In addition, a further £20m ‘Monitored Grant’ is to be provided with Clubs able to apply for it based on ‘need’, with a joint EFL and Premier League panel to determine Club eligibility.
    • Clubs subsequently in receipt of a ‘monitored grant’ will be subject to certain restrictions, in respect to transfer spend and player wages.
    • Clubs who keep to the restrictions will not have to repay any of the funding required, whereas for Clubs in breach, the ‘monitored grant’ becomes repayable by the Club.
  • Any Club in receipt of a grant or monitored grant payment will be required to continue to maintain compliance with the EFL’s financial regulations.

Although the amounts per club appear small

On first glance it appears reasonable
I agree, although there are few things that aren't clear. What about teams, like us, who have spent time across 2 divisions? How will they calculate the lost gate revenue element? The monitored grant sounds like a bit of a free for all. We should put our applications in quickly; hopefully we are, and will remain, within the spend restrictions/financial regulations so wouldn't have to repay anything.

I'm guessing that the payment for the residue of last season will be at L1 rates and the rest at L2. Think the monitored grant involves wage and transfer restrictions, so probably something we'd approach with caution. It doesn't look like that generous a settlement.
