Vaughn is the lone striker, but it is an attacking '5 man midfield. Just up to them to get to him.

Once again we’re making a poor side look half decent. Two changes. Smith and McDonald on for Khan and O’Connor. Looks like 4-4-2.

At least he’s changing it but once again his starting 11 hasn’t worked.

GOAL!! Clarke heads in Feeneys free kick

Far from convincing first half showing but at least we’re winning. A good save from Scottie early on but Similar issues to the orient game with a lone striker isolated and big gaps between the midfield and attack. To be fair Jacko changed it including taking off the ineffective Khan and we now have 2 up front in a 5-3-2

southend look nothing special so hopefully we can go on and get a second goal.

We lead but dont deserve it, we again were poor and created little and gave them far too.much time on the ball.

We lead through a set play but it is another poor performance. Southend have been the more dangerous side and we are too deep and have created nothing in open play.

I think Southend will be disappointed going in 1-0 down.

Even with the changes and the lead from a great header by Clarke, we haven’t been much better. Not sure about Feeney as wing-back. We need to press them more.

Far from convincing but 3 points, better in the second half and we looked dangerous from set pieces. Good that Vaughan got a full game and we kept a clean sheet

A better second half from Rovers and I think we deserved the victory in the end.

The first half picked up where Tuesday nght left off. We were far too deep, too reactive and looked scared of very poor quality opposition. We failed to put any real pressure on the ball and allowed Southend to get control of midfield and play some reasonable football, albeit without creating too many clear chances. The first goal - a great ball from Feeney and a fantastic, unchallenged header from Clarke - was our only meaningful effort on goal in the half.

The formation change to 532 did improve things and we played ten yards higher up the pitch after half time. Simply by getting in Southend's faces and putting some pressure on the ball, we got more possession in attacking areas and played some reasonable stuff at times. Their keeper made a couple of great saves to deny Vaughan and Smith and we also hit the woodwork.

Individually, I thought Feeney and McDonald both had good games and produced some great deliveries from set plays, where we looked dangerous today; Young's workrate was very good and he showed some nice touches. However, Vaughan was my man of the match, for his workrate and the vital second goal.

If Jacko can adopt the approach he did in the second half from the kick off in future, and stop showing too much respect to poor opposition, he (and we) will be ok.

Yes, agreed. It was a much better second half and it was nice to see the players running at the opposition for a change. Vaughan was excellent and probably shaded it for MOTM but I thought Clarke had a great game too. Hopefully MJ can learn from this game.

Something to build on now. Jacko needs to get his starting eleven right though

While we deserved the win in the end, we'll only find out in the coming weeks if it's going to lead to a change in approach by Mike Jackson or was simply papering over the cracks. For now, I'm just going to enjoy the victory and see what happens at Crawley.

The positives were a solid defensive performance, although Dave Higgins was rightly critical of some poor distribution and aimless punts from Mark Ellis. McDonald when he came on was excellent at set pieces, Young was steady and both Morris and Smith got more into the game as the match went on.

MoM agree with James Vaughan, who dispelled any fitness doubts with a great all-round performance. Maybe a bit lucky with the goal, but he wasn't afraid to shoot and had a couple of other good chance, while he did a lot of good defensive work too.

The next ten days are crucial. We play three middling sides of the kind we have not beaten so far this season, but have to beat if we are going to mount a promotion challenge.

We have to start those games far better than we have the last three if we are to pick up points.

I dont think there are any good sides in this league I think the standard is poor, we need to be positive and go st teams from the start.
