It sounded like an improvement on Saturday and although Port Vale played a weaker team, they have a fair amount of depth in their squad. However it will be a concern for Mike Jackson that he's not managed a win in pre-season and that we seem a little lacking in fire-power.

Sorry but I am not feeling terribly positive about it all at present. There is talk of Norwood rejoining Micky on loan as he is clearly not a first choice at Ipswich. He will not return to us sadly as lack of goals are going to kill us. James was always the difference. We are going to have to rely on keeping other teams out and hoping we can sneak one or two. The EFL have really duded us. There will be no legal action but it would be nice if we got some compensation which might enable us to sign someone capable of scoring a few goals.

Vaughan will score goals. There were encouraging signs tonight and it is far too early to judge how the season will develop.

Clearly confidence will continue to be low in the squad. What's important is that morale is kept up. Once that sinks, we could quickly be in trouble. However, in football things can change very quickly. It's far too early to start worrying. A win on Saturday and we could be top of the league. ;)

All social gatherings larger than six people are to be banned from 14th September.

That surely means crowds will not be back in football grounds in October.

There will be 3500 at Doncaster races today do it's not certain that crowds wont be back in October.

There are strong hints they may not allow these people in after the PMs new ruling as numbers continue to rise.

Will be interesting who is in goal on Saturday that’s for sure. I’m guessing Scottie
I am not so sure. Noticeable last night how much better Murphy is with distribution. Looked solid and made a couple of good penalty saves - hope he starts.

Well difficult to know what to make of that. Vale made 9 changes so you could say we were playing their "reserves". That shows one problem we have at the moment - our "reserves" would be way less strong than our first team - we don't have that strength in depth for sure.
Vale were less impressive than Harrogate I felt which gave us more time to organise. On the other hand our play was so much better than Saturday. More energy round the pitch, some neat interplay, far less hoofball and generally much better defending. Thought McDonald and OConnor did very well as did Rides. Morris was superb - a definite MOM performance whilst Spearing did much better than Saturday and looked more on it. Khan also did well and Banks is clearly not yet match fit but looked much better today and we saw some of his flicks and tricks which was good to see. Problem as others have said remains that we are creating so little. Morris shot set up by Payne was a belter and Lewis missed a sitter near the end as easy as the header they missed in the first half but that was it. Felt sorry for Payne as he ran himself ragged but the final balls were simply not there for him. Thinking simply having Vaughan fit is not right in my view. The service needs to be better whether it is Payne or Vaughan playing. Jacko said as much in his post match interview.
Ultimately despite the caveats pleased with last night - far more like it.

Simply playing with two strikers - whether Vaughan or somebody else - will improve the creation of chances, becasue there will be more options for the player on the ball. At present it is very static up front, with Payne there on his own, which means the midfielders are very limited in what they can create.

Yes. Defensively, we will be fine this season. We just need a bit more bite in the attacking areas.

Agreed. But we only have three senior strikers - Payne, Ferrier and Vaughan. This leaves little scope for injuries, suspensions and loss of form. I think we definitely need another forward.

Got to trust in Jacko. He’ll know that Payne and Vaughan are unsuitable for the lone striker role. Neither is mobile enough. Ferrier is more suited but still a bit hit and miss for me.

Very early days as to what system Jacko will play regularly but I’m sure he realises we don’t have the personnel for one up front

Doncaster races will have no crowds from tomorrow. We are moving backwards again.

The events are being delayed rather than cancelled.

The daft thing is you cant be in a group of more than 6 but can go the pub.

I think they've allowed Cambridge to continue the pilot but with numbers reduced to 1k.
