A very disappointing performance.
The makeshift defence understandably did not cope in the opening minutes and were bullied by O'Grady and Murphy. The fist goal was very poor defensively, and I thought Davies should also have done better having got two hands on the shot. However, Feeney and Woods did settle into the game although I am not convinced either goal would have been conceded if the centre backs had been Clarke and Monthe. For the remainder of the fist half I thought we were slightly the better side, playing some decent football, even if the final ball was missing as so often this season. Gilmour impressed in midfield and Morris was influential again.
However, the second half was abysmal. Bolton began the half with more urgency, which was difficult to fathom given the relative positions of the two clubs, and we huffed and puffed but created absolutely nothing. I don't think we registered a shot on or off target in the forty five minutes.
There were good footballers in our side today who performed well - Wilson, Morris, Gilmour - but there are simply too many players around them who are incapable at this level. I finally lost patience with a lot of them today: Caprice either underhit or overhit every cross and was awful; Jennings was fed the ball in good areas by Gilmour but generally miscontrolled and gave the ball away; Ferrier, for all his huffing and puffing, gave away endless silly free kicks and failed to trap the ball and lay it off when supplied by Wilson or Vaughan.
I still think performances might improve over time when the new arrivals settle in, but there are simply too many players in the squad that are unfit for League One football.
Wimbledon are now the only team we have a hope of catching, but a victory has to come very, very soon.
