Payne’s best performance was the last 20 minutes away at Coventry when he was ace at centre back!

I see Josh Ginnelli has moved on loan from Preston to Bristol Rovers. I wonder if Micky enquired about him, but I expect anyone of better quality than we have now is out of our price bracket. Assuming we stay up, I wonder if Micky will be able to afford significantly better players next season.

If we do stay up, I would guess next season will also be a struggle.
Hard to call. Significant resources will have to go on the pitch, which means less on the squad, but even without the Cup run, we most be getting more in on match day.

The graphs which MP discussed at the TROSC AGM showed a small increase in budget next season, but not a huge one. I think we would still broadly be shopping in the same market for players.

The struggle might not be quite as desperate as this season, but I think we would still be in the bottom half.

Then we need to bring on one or two from our youth team or improve some of the players we already have like CBT, Sid or Morgan. Other league teams seem to be able to sign and develop non-league players but I can't remember the last time we did this successfully, except when we were also in the NL.

Think that’s a realistic assessment of our prospects if we stay up this time. With a full compliment of teams and relegation places, L1 is inevitably going to be tougher.

I don't think that is true at all to be honest. Norwood, Jennings, Monthe, Caprice and others all had no or minimal league experience and we have developed all of them into Football League standard players. There is only so much you can do if you don't have the resources to pluck established players off the shelf, which a number of clubs in this division can do. Our own youth development is massively hindered by the EPP rules.

Fair point - and you could have mentioned Ollie Norburn too. However, most were signed when we were a non-league club and were playing in the same league. It's a bit more challenging to pluck out non-league players and move them into a EFL team.

The really outstanding non league players still tend to be very expensive and are by picked up by lower League clubs with money, like Peterborough.

we appear to have a young keeper in the squad (pilling) who never got a chance with mellon so to think he would suddenly promote from the youth even if good enough is far fetched, as for captice I still cringe when he plays (I know we have injuries) but he is totally out of his depth at this level

I am pretty sure Blackett Taylor, Hepburn Murphy, Gilmour and even Nelson (who is still young) have played quite a few games this season.

They all fit the definition of young players being given a chance.

Gilmour hardly played before his injury, it's more the lack of players coming through the ranks that is a concern for me

The academy has effectively closed due to the EPP rules, which means it is highly unlikely we will produce another Koumas.

The club have said many times that the emphasis now is on taking young players released from bigger clubs and developing them. Blackett Taylor, Gilmour, Nelson and Hepburn Murphy all come into that category. Gilmour played a number of times last season, less so this season, but he was involved when he got injured.

Hepburn-Murphy is still on Villa's books though. Gilmour seemed to get more chances while on loan than after he signed a permanent deal.

Yes, but you get my point. He is likely to be released in the summer and we might be able to take him if we are still interested.

I've no idea what RHMs prospects of another deal at Villa are, but were he to be released, would we be able to afford him? You look at the likes of Ginnelly who went to Walsall after being strongly linked with usfollowing a loan spell.
