With all the injuries, is there a questionmark against the training regime? Admittedly there will always be injuries but we do seem to have rather a lot of bad luck.

Possibly, but I think some players had a history of injury (Miller) and some came with injury (Maddox).

That was a good half from Rovers, albeit against very limited opposition. We have played some good stuff and have just been let down by our finishing. Blackett-Taylor has been outstanding.

A decent performance by Rovers in a game we completely dominated. The main positives were outstanding performances by Blackett-Taylor and Gilmour. Given the midfield absences, I would not be surprised to see Harvey start on Saturday.

I thought Borthwick Jackson had a decent game, but Ponticelli was disappointing; neat and tidy but lacking around the eighteen yard box.

Well I thoroughly enjoyed tonight bizarrely!
Some decent play overall and more importantly aside from their bizarre goal Pilling had nothing to do!
I also thought Gilmour was excellent, controlling and directing the play and even tho against youngsters I still remain of the opinion he should be in the starting 11 although MM clearly does not.. Jennings by contrast is looking a bit out of his depth this season in my view - his first touch was again poor on several occasions. Pilling impossible to comment on - no chance with the goal and no save to make. Caprice did well as did Borthwick Taylor aside from throwing the ball to nobody for their goal. Ray and especially Manny did fine also. Potter was solid but surprisingly played second fiddle to Gilmour. Morris had another decent game - from thinking MM had made a mistake keeping him on I have changed my view although he should be playing on the left - in place of Jennings? Ponticelli I just don't see as being good enough and would suggest we try and get the loan cancelled early if at all possible. Finally CBT was excellent - so quick and some great turns leaving his marker for dead. Yes he still tries to go it alone a touch too often and needs to improve his final pass but if he stays fit he will become an absolute gem - says it all that he supposedly turned down another contract at Villa.... he looked at least as good as any Villa player today.
My only slight disappointment is the youngsters didn't get any game time but clearly MM wanted us to progress this year despite the injuries so mission accomplished even if Villa were pretty lightweight.

I think the Jennings situation is an interesting one. I agree that he has looked out of his depth technically at this level much of the time, with a heavy first touch and a lack of awareness of what is around him. Our midfield generally looks better without him at the moment, because we move the ball more slickly, with more first time passes.

However, after tonight's goal he is our joint top scorer. His goalscoring could be priceless to us at this level and, a bit like Payne, even if his all round game is not always convincing he will still have a part to play this season.

Thanks for the reports. We actually have earned a rare appearance in the knockout stage, partly due to Bury's demise. Although still unlikely, this competition probably provides our only chance of a fourth Wembley appearance. If we can win a couple more games, who knows?

Might be worth disrupting the Payne/Mullin partnership to accomadate Blackett-Taylor alongside one of them. I do rate Gilmour and hope he gets more starts. He does have composure and sees the pass early.

Encouraging performance from the reports. It’s been a puzzle why Gilmour has featured so rarely and hopefully his good showing in this game will bring him into contention. Pleased CBT made an impact too, while It’s good to have Ray back as a defensive option.

Jennings is primarily a forward, so the fact that he’s deployed mainly in a midfield role for Rovers is a tribute to his versatility. He does seem to have found the step up a league difficult, but can hopefully adapt his game.

The game with Salford ought to be an opportunity to field some of the youngsters, now we’ve qualified for the next stage.

Agree, except for Ponticelli. We have an agreement with Coventry, he's only here till December and the way our injuries are going we might soon be desperate. :(

Nobody is suggesting that we renege on the agreement but if he is not getting game time it might be worth trying to get him some game time by agreeing with Coventry to cancel the loan early. I don't for one minute think we will need to play him TBH.

I would jeep him given the injuries. Only until Dec and he takes weight off the lads further up the pecking order in low level games. May need him to come off bench in a league game near the end if we need to slow a game down.....if ever in a winning position. I am sure they will be looking for someone new now ready for January..
