Seeing Neil Danns has been called up for international duty I am wondering how many countries have now capped Rovers players? Wales, Scotland, NI, ROI, Hume (Canada), Jamaica (Goody), Pakistan (Ahmed), St Kitts (Maynard), Guyana (Danns). Any others?

Going back a bit I wonder if Onyeali ever played for Nigeria. He played for Rovers when he was a student at Liverpool Uni around 1960.

Going even further back, there was George Moorhouse (United States). I think he was our first ever international player, and certainly the first player of English birth to feature in a World Cup.

Further research suggests that Onyeali was at what was then Birkenhead Tech College. He scored 8 in 13 games in 60-61.Ivan Bonetti - Italy 1996 former international.

Are we talking whilst at Rovers or at any stage? If the latter, could suggest a few more;

Dixie Dean, Joe Hart & Aaron Cresswell
Paul Hall and Theodore Whitmore (also Jamaica)
Tyrone Loran (Netherland Antilles)
Kitson Bain (Grenada)
Edrissa Sonko (The Gambia)
Enoch Showumni and Kayode Odejayi (Nigeria)
Eugene Dadi (Ivory Coast)
Bell Baggie (Sierra Leone)

I'm just talking about players who were capped while contracted to Rovers. Not Ron Yeats, Dixie Dean etc.

Aldo definitely, but think Mcateer was done with Ireland by the time he joined us.

I'm struggling to think who played for Northern Ireland whilst with us... probably an obvious one I'm missing!

I think Ian Nolan and Adam McGurk were both called up for NI while with us. Colin Clarke obviously was after he departed.

Robbie Stockdale played a few times for Scotland when Berti Vogts was giving out caps like confetti, and before him there was someone called Pat Nevin. Neither capped while at Rovers though

Clarke was definitely called up before he left us. I remember talking to him in a pub after a Colchester Friday night away game and he was saying he fell on his arse in front of the home fans while warming up! To his embarrassment he received a round of applause! If memory serves it was away vs Spain, possibly in Majorca, I don't know if he actually got onto the pitch though.

Fonners called up numerous times while at Rovers but I don't think he ever got off the bench! I think Michael Ricketts may have been a tad past his England form when he "appeared" for us - he was abject!

Thanks for all your help. Based on this and some further research, the full list of countries that have fielded Rovers players while they were at the club are: Wales (Rowley, Coyne and others), Scotland (Nevin), NI (Nolan), ROI (Aldridge and others), Canada (Hume), Jamaica (Goody), Pakistan (Ahmed), St Kitts (Maynard), Guyana (Danns), Grenada (Bain), Sierra Leone (Bell-Baggie), Gambia (Sonko), Nigeria (Onyeali). I make that 13.

Of those, some made more impact at international level than at Prenton Park. For example, Adnan Ahmed and Kithson Bain both started more internationals while at Rovers than league games.

Similar to Eric Nixon, who was on standby for the England squad while at Rovers - the closest we have come to a full England international ?
Yep, that must be so. I hadn't realised that. In fact, we had to wait a long time for our first international. I think it was Tony Rowley, whose sole cap was in 1959 when Wales had a fantastic team which had reached the World Cup quarter-finals the previous year, losing only 0-1 to Brazil with John Charles out injured. Our second was probably Onyeali then a long wait for another. Since then, the rules have changed to allow foreign players in and ancestry to count. There are also a lot more international teams. Even now, we've probably fielded no more than a couple of dozen current internationals, so it's something to note and celebrate.
