I can see where Boz is coming from in the fact that we lost a goal scorer, have moved up a division and have not replaced him. I think it’s fair to wonder where the goals will come from.

Having said that, we simply don’t know if the players we have now are good enough to carry us forward. It’s all pretty much guesswork until the season starts and we start playing competitive games again.

Still too early to judge. As things stand, top half. If we get another decent striker, then play-offs. With Cook or Rowe, I'd have said promotion was a real possibility.

However, we still have one regular goalscorer under contract. It is not like our last stint in League Two when we were reliant on George Donnelly and Eliott Richards.

Last season we had a strike partnership that was prolific, but that is highly unusual in our history. The last time we had two forwards who were natural goalscorers was in the 1984-5 season with Clayton and Clarke.

I am optimistic but I see where Ian is coming from. Let us hope the squad is good enough although I am concerned that Cook has not been replaced not so much because of his past rapport with Cook but more the fact that if Norwood is injured or suspended we will be scrambling for goals.

If our usual injury rate remains at average I’m going for 14th. However, a quality striker & luckier fitness record could result in a cheeky shot at the play offs in my opinion but that I suspect would require us hitting the ground running which I’m not entirely convinced will happen due to early absentees & players without a pre-season getting up to speed. If we can ride out the first month I’ll be a lot more confident as to our aspirations!

During the short Edwards spell in charge,we also had Odejayi and Stockton, George Donnelly came late to the wake and made minimal contribution. I cannot recall the many strikers Adams loaned during his disasterous stint as manager. Undoubtedly Norwood is better than anyone we had then, but I agree with drwhoman below re the potential difficulties should Norwood be unavailable.

Failing to replace Cook is not in isolation fatal to our prospects. However coupled with the lack of a steady stream of goals from midfield, along with the goalkeeping and defensive injuries makes it a lot harder to get off to a good start.

We would have been screwed if Ian Muir or John Aldridge had been injured back in the day, but we were not terrified of a relegation battle every pre-season in the mid-nineties.

There are plenty of goals in a midfield that features Jennings and Smith. It is a question of using tactics that get them into goalscoring positions, something I believe Mellon is capable of.

Fair comment RLC but I know that you would agree that the general quality of the team was better in those days. Anyway, as always, time will tell!

I think the general quality of the current squad is fine though, certainly not of relegation standard.

Mid table me thinks. Might be in the play off mix before Christmas with some early enthusiasm and momentum - but then fade to comfy mid table. Relegation shouldn't be a worry.

I've just had a pre-season ponder and thought about what state we would be in if we had not gone up. Certainly, we'd have lost Andy and Eddie, but also probably Connor and Scott. If we are struggling now to find replacements for these players, how difficult would it be in the NL? Fortunately, last year's NL was probably the weakest of the three years we were there, but I think the NL this year will be its strongest for years with Barnet, Chesterfield and Salford now in the mix. Glad to be above it all.

With that thought in mind, maybe a mid-table finish this term won't be that bad.

I agree. We would have been in a spot of bother if we had stayed down.

And a new official website!
Along with their monthly, season and match passes. Is anyone thinking of signing up for these ?

I just have, so I will let you know if it is worth it !

It seems that you get the manager and player interviews on the free service, but have to pay for match highlights and commentaries.
