I went tonight and thought we were generally impressive, particularly the younger members of the squad. Cole and Richards were excellent in the first half and Kirby was also bright and positive. Laird impressed with his range of passing and positional sense and looks a very good player.

We played a different eleven in the second half, with Odejayi and Baggy surprisingly chosen as a front two. Despite Abbs getting two goals (one a penalty which he prevented Power from taking) he was unconvincing, Odejayi even more so. It is early days, but on tonight's evidence Stockton and Richards would be my forward pairing. After half time James Rowe was the standout performer, while Max also scored with a great volley from the edge of the box; the finish was more convincing than his new haircut, somewhere between Joey Barton and Zlatan Ibrahimovich.

In general, we passed and moved well and went long on very few occasions. The star performers were Rowe and Stockton; Cole, in particular, seems to have taken confidence from the change of management and seems determined to impose himself this season.

Thanks for the report. I think we'll see a lot more of Stockton this season.

Did any of the trialists stand out?

BTW, some of you may be interested in what John Barnes is up to. While on holiday, I saw him on South African TV as a pundit for the World Cup. I have to say their coverage was very impressive. (Way off topic, I know, but not worth starting a new thread.)
