Charlton 1-1 Tranmere |

Tranmere
Rovers secured a vital point away to Charlton Athletic as they bid to
avoid relegation from League One with a battling 1-1 draw at The Valley.
Les Parry named the same line-up which defeated Yeovil four days
earlier as Chris Shuker kept his place in a 4-4-2 formation as Rovers
looked to take the game to the Addicks. The home side
dominated the early stages with Luke Daniels having to be at his best
to deny strike pair Deon Burton and David Mooney in the opening 20
minutes. But other than those two saves, the Tranmere goalkeeper had
very little to do for the rest of the half, although the same could
also be said for Charlton's two goalkeepers too, as Rob Elliot was
replaced between the sticks by Darren Randolph on 35 minutes.
At
the beginning of the second half, Rovers took a surprise lead. Shuker
did well to win a corner for the visitors, the ball was swung into the
danger zone and was flicked on by Craig Curran before Charlton defender
Sam Sodje deflected the ball past his own goalkeeper to give Tranmere
the lead.
Curaan had a header wide moments later as Rovers
looked to double their advantage. But on 56 minutes, that advantage
disappeared as home team skipper, Nicky Bailey, struck the ball past
Daniels following a corner to bring the scores level.
Terry
Gornell wasted an opportunity to give the visitors the lead once more
after good play by strike partner Ian Thomas-Moore. The ball was played
through to Gornell who directed his effort straight at Randolph.
Both
sides had chances to win the game before the end. Daniels had to make
saves to stop efforts by Bailey, Leon McKenzie and Burton. While at the
other end, Gareth Edds and Thomas-Moore had shots saved by Randolph,
Curran put a great chance wide of the post, and Ian Goodison hit the
crossbar as Rovers were so unlucky not to walk away with maximum points.
The
game was to finish on a bitter note for the visitors as full-back
Zoumana Bakayogo was given his marching orders in stoppage time for a
second yellow card. That means he will miss Rovers' next game against
fellow strugglers Oldham at Prenton Park next weekend.
Tranmere
(4-4-2) : Daniels; Logan, Taylor, Goodison, Bakayogo; Curran, Welsh
(Edds 58), McLaren, Shuker (Mahon 84); Thomas-Moore, Gornell. Unused subs: Collister, Cresswell, Broomes, McCready, Barnett.
