Tranmere 2-1 Yeovil |
26 January 2010 | Written by Paul Harper |
Tranmere
ended their goal drought to record their first victory of 2010 as they
ran out 2-1 winners against Yeovil Town at Prenton Park.
Rovers
boss Les Parry adopted a more conventional 4-4-2 formation with Chris
Shuker coming into the side at the expense of Aussie Gareth Edds.
The
first half was a completely forgettable event. It involved scrappy
midfield play with both sides struggling to string two passes together.
The
only noteworthy chances on goal both fell to Tranmere forward Terry
Gornell. The first came following Ian Thomas-Moore's headed flick-on.
Gornell shielded the ball and held off the challenge from the defender
but with just the goalkeeper to beat he hooked the ball over the
crossbar. Then moments later he picked up the ball on the edge of the
area and fired a low drive which was well saved by Yeovil custodian
Alex McCarthy.
Thankfully, the second half was much brighter and
the game burst into life three minutes into the second period when
Rovers took the lead. With the ball pinballing around the penalty area,
Ian Goodison laid the ball to Thomas-Moore who from the edge of the
18-yard box poked a shot into the bottom corner of the goal to the
delight of the home faithful.
Four minutes later, and Rovers
made it 2-0. A clever free-kick straight from the training ground saw
Shuker find the forward darting run of Craig Curran, whose low cross
into the six-yard box was diverted into the net by young defender Ash
Taylor.
Rovers began to dominate proceedings and were playing
some neat passing football which created chances to further increase
their advantage. Shuker and Thomas-Moore had efforts from outside the
area which had McCarthy scrambling across his goal to deal with.
However,
as always with Tranmere, it was never as straight forward as it should
have been. Ryan Mason and Dean Bowditch both wasted good opportunities
running through on goal, before great last ditch challenges by first
Goodison and secondly Zoumana Bakayogo denied them the chance to get a
shot away.
And seconds into stoppage time at the end of the
game, referee Graham Salisbury awarded the visitors a penalty following
a soft foul by Shay Logan. Ryan Mason converted the spot-kick despite
Luke Daniels diving the right way, but fortunately for Tranmere fans,
it was too little, too late as Rovers held on for three precious points.
Tranmere (4-4-2): Daniels; Logan, Taylor, Goodison, Bakayogo; Shuker, McLaren, Welsh, Curran; Gornell, Thomas-Moore. Subs not used: Collister, Broomes, McCready, Cresswell, Barnett, Mahon, Edds.
