Oldham 0-0 Tranmere |
20 January 2010 | Written by Paul Harper |
Tranmere played out a goalless draw at Oldham's Boundary Park as they played their first league match of 2010.
Les
Parry named an unchanged line-up once again from that which took to the
field against Wolves in the FA Cup 17 days ago. The only changes were
seen on the bench with Alan Mahon coming back into the fold following a
lengthy spell out through injury.
Tranmere started the game
brightly with Terry Gornell going close in the opening minutes but
putting the ball past the post, while Ash Taylor hit a volley from
which Oldham goalkeeper Dean Brill had to make a good save.
Gornell
fired a tame shot at Brill after 10 minutes, while his strike partners
Craig Curran and Ian Thomas-Moore each had efforts on goal which
finished narrowly wide as Rovers started on the front foot, taking the
game to the home team.
Polish striker Pawel Abbott had Oldham's
first couple of efforts towards goal. Neither tested Tranmere keeper
Luke Daniels as he fired wide and then over the crossbar as the Latics
tried to counter attack.
Brill was in action again ten minutes
before the interval, as he saved Paul McLaren's free-kick before Curran
fired a hard shot which the keeper did well to hold on to as Rovers
looked to take a lead into the half time break.
They almost went
in a goal behind as they survived a lucky escape when former Tranmere
defender Reuben Hazell almost scrambled the ball home only for Shay
Logan to clear the ball off the line as the teams went in at half time
with the score goalless.
After the break, the game became more
and more scrappy, with both sides looking ever keener not to lose
rather than take the game by the threshold and go for victory.
Oldham
had the best opportunities to score. First on 56 minutes when a flurry
of shots on goal were blocked by flying Tranmere challenges as the
Rovers' players put their bodies on the line for the cause.
Daniels
was brought into action for the first time with twenty minutes
remaining, as Abbott did well to turn and get a shot away which the
loanee goalkeeper did well to deal with.
Neither team had any
further noteworthy effort on goal as the game petered out as a goalless
draw. It's another point as Tranmere bid to try and escape from the
relegation zone, but they were left to rue those first half misses. A
lack of goals must be of worry to Les Parry, as Rovers go three games
without hitting the net.
Both sides remain in the relegation zone, with Rovers' next test being at MK Dons on Saturday.
Tranmere (4-3-3): Daniels; Logan, Taylor, Goodison,
Bakayogo; Edds, McLaren, Welsh; Thomas-Moore, Gornell, Curran.
Subs not used: Collister, Broomes, Cresswell, Barnett, Shuker,
Mahon, Macauley.
