Movers and shakers in division one |
03 May 2008 |
As another season draws to a close with nothing more than an empty wallet to show for it, there's been an almighty scramble to clinch promotion and at the other end of the table a similar battle to avoid the dreaded drop. Congratulations to Swansea and Nottm Forest who have been promoted to the Championship. Commiserations to Bournemouth, Gillingham, Port Vale and Luton who drop down to Division Two. Guaranteed to be joining us from Division Two next season will be MK Dons, Peterborough and Hereford. Congratulations to them.. |
Northampton 2 - 1 Tranmere |
03 May 2008 |
Tranmere's final game of the season ended in defeat and duly reflected Tranmere's 07-08 campaign. A defeat away from home, a sending off and losing by the odd goal is a scenario all to familiar for Tranmere supporters. The Cobblers couldn't have wished for a better start as they went 1-0 up after just three minutes. Rovers equalised just before half time with a stunning overhead kick by top goalscorer Chris Greenacre. However, the second half wasn't a good one for Tranmere as they conceded the winning goal on 69 minutes and 10 minutes later Ian Goodison recieved his second yellow card of the game (for apparent aggressive behaviour!) ended the game as a contest. Tranmere finish the season in 11th place. |
Goodison named as player of the season |
29 Apr 2008 |
Ian Goodison has been voted as player of the season by Tranmere Rovers supporters. The Jamaican international defender took the award for the second year in succession. Full-back Andy Taylor was named young player of the season. Paul McLaren picked up the players' player of the season award with midfield partner Steve Jennings collecting the young player's award in the poll. |
Tranmere 1 - 0 Southend |
27 Apr 2008 |
Southend's chances of automatic promotion came to an end as they were beaten 1-0 at Tranmere to suffer their first defeat in 14 games. It was a good performance by Tranmere after they just missed out on the play-off zone as the Merseysiders dominated for much of the game.
Early on Shane Sherriff saw a shot deflected just over and then a Chris Greenacre effort was well saved by Darryl Flahavan. Tranmere missed a great chance to take the lead after 35 minutes when Ian Moore was put clear by Sherriff but Flahavan made a blocking save.
Southend produced little in the first period, with their best chances coming when Alan McCormack fired just wide and a header by Alex Revell was turned away by keeper Danny Coyne.
Tranmere always looked the more likely to score and they went ahead in the 53rd minute when Antony Kay headed home from a pin-point cross by Sherriff. Kay and Greenacre both went close to adding to the home lead as Tranmere won for the first time in four outings. |
