A vital game for Rovers, as we need the financial boost of a cup run after the events of the summer. It won't be easy against a Halifax team that have exceeded expectations this season and have some decent players, notably Tom Denton and Adam Morgan up front and tricky winger Matt Kysolo. Ex-Rovers Martin Riley and Ben Tomlinson could also play some part. In the last couple of seasons we have experienced the humiliation of failing to make the first round proper, Rovers last making progress in this competition in 2014-15 under the great Micky Adams.

In terms of selection, I think we will stick with the 442 formation with Mottley-Henry on one wing and Jennings playing out of position on the other. However, in a difficult tie away from home I wonder whether Mellon will opt for Jay Harris ahead of Jeff Hughes, albeit the latter actually had an good game last Saturday. Hopefully the improvement of the last couple of weeks will continue and we can at least force a replay from this match.

Prediction: draw or narrow Rovers victory, with 5-600 SWA in attendance.

Halifax have done better than I expected on their return to the NL. They've a habit of scrapping out battling draws/wins, despite a poor disciplinary record. Denton was sent off in their draw at Boreham Wood, so one less to worry about from those RLC lists above.

Has Mottley-Henry been given permission to play in this game by Barnsley? MM said something in his Chester post-match remarks suggesting that a request would be made, so it's not a given and Dylan's absence would require a re-think of our line-up and approach. McDonagh has got permission to play.

Due to our suggested financial difficulties, it is important to make progress and I'd anticipate a strong line-up. Can see the merit in replacing Hughes with Harris, but doubt it will happen, though both might play if DMH unavailable.

Prediction: Not expecting a big travelling support for this, no more than ~400. It would be good to make the first round of the FA Cup even without our money issues, but if we do, it will be after a draw at the Shay. I'm not that confident we'll manage that.

There is an argument that the league is our priority and that we should use this game as a way of seeing what some squad players can do. I don't mean fielding a weak team, but MM might think about games for two or three from Pilling, Gumbs, Clarke, Duggan, Waring and Alabi.

I don't think there is much chance of that BBTC. This game is massively important from a financial perspective.

I think we should use the FA Trophy to experiment, not the FA Cup.

MM says DMH has been given permission to play. A positive!

That is good news, drwhoman. Will help us keep the same shape and young Dylan shows a lot of promise.

Think that Micky daren’t risk anything and will select what he thinks is his strongest side. Personally would like to see Alabi getting some match time and freshening things up might work to our benefit, so long as it’s not McDonagh replacing Cook.

It was interesting also that MM said we were offered Liam Noble this week, but did not take him as we are still looking to bring in another wide man. Apparently two players could still come in next week.

See Noble’s gone back to Notts County now.

I’m not sure we have given enough opportunity to our own contracted players, but where the loan is relatively short with an option to extend, suppose there is some merit in it.

Perhaps you are right, RLC, although views on this forum about the FA Cup seem to have changed since last year. We haven't had a decent FA Cup run since 2004 when in League One. It's very unlikely we'll have one this season and we'll need to win three games at least before getting a plum tie. A better argument for playing a strong team is to build up more momentum, although I think giving Clarke and Pilling a game would not significantly weaken the team.

I am struggling to get enthusiastic about this one. Maybe I'm still hungover from the disappointment of last Saturday and the fact that we have to actually qualify for the cup these days.

I would look at one or two changes possibly. I'd give Alabi a run out as I was disappointed he didn't come on against Chester when it was all set up for him to get his first rovers goal against his old employers. Its important those players not in the starting 11 feel confident when they have to come on and do a job so I think this is an opportunity to do this and give them some game time.

I wouldn't disrupt the defence and keeper and most of the midfield - possibly just make a couple of changes. I'd being Harris back in too.

we should put out our strongest possible team, a good cup run did Lincoln no harm last season, we haven't had a good cup run in years and it has not benefitted the club at all. Hopefully we will start to convert some chances I'm going for a 2 1 win

Joining the thread somewhat late and agree with those that say a virtually full strength team should be selected.
We all want promotion as our priority but I think, given our apparent financial straits, we now have to consider maintaining our very existence as equal a priority. Cup money is desperately needed.
What's the prize for winning Saturday? £12k?
We can't even turn our noses up at that paltry sum.
It was a terrific effort from Imps (and Sutton) last season. They kept going on all three fronts, granted without the injuries we had. They proved there is no such thing as fatigue if your winning and I hope they're fired up for it.
Would like to see a slot for Harris but it would be unfair on the starting eleven from last week to make a token change.

Denton and Kysolo are both suspended, which is a bonus for us. Definitely a winnable fixture.

Somehow I feel more confident because it's an away fixture, as a little less pressure on us and a bit more on the Shaymen. Any win will do, but it would be nice to score more than one goal for a change!

We have created numerous chances and should be out of sight. Poor defending let Halifax back in it. Cracking finish by norwood.
