I already have a bad feeling......

After the Stockport game I was on a high and felt that the feel good factor was back among supporters and that relations with the club and ourselves had improved. I felt that this season would be one to learn from the lessons of the last and begin to stabilise what was in many parts of last season a joke. I actually found myself having hopes of a comfortable mid table finish and had the prospect of watching a team who would be able to compete with at least some of the teams in our division next season.

I have to say tho folks a good few weeks on from that day in May I now think we are going to be in serious trouble again this year. There are number of reasons for this in my own humble opinion:

1/ The budget- Slashed again this year after having been one of the lowest in the league. Many out of contract players will be out of our price range however will be within budget of many clubs in our division. As a result we are left to sift through what is left. We either have to look at young players, old journey men who have at some point had a connection to the club or young loanees from other clubs in higher leagues. We simply cant lure enough adequate talent here to be able to compete. (The exception to this rule is Ladabie)

2/ The lack of coaching staff. I have more coaching staff at my under 8s team than we do. Again budget constraints seem to be the key here, however I wonder how many other clubs in League 1 operate with only one coach/assistant manager, a keeper coach and a physio? That is about it. Correct me if I am wrong but I am sure Parry came out the other week to talk about a change in transfer policy were we will bring kids through or buy them young to sell them on at a profit. How in gods name is that supposed to work when there is noone running the academy?

3/ The management. I like Les and was one of the people who said he deserved a chance. However I said this on the basis of him having good people behind him such as Allison. He is another to have now left, leaving us with only Shaun and Les. We are pinning our hopes on someone with 6 months of managerial experience and someone who has only coached at youth team level. (This to me is no different than having Digger and Trigger at the helm) No experience and very little tactical know how. Les has the 433 and nothing else in the locker, what happens when by October teams have already figured us out?

4/ How much can you physically cost cut till there is nothing left to cut? Areas of the ground will be closed next season and I am sure more budget cuts will be on the horizon. I very much doubt the supporters would get behind another Les Aid so we can count out anyone like Andy Robbo coming back. I just feel that we are like a business that is slowly getting wound down.

There are my points I am sure many of you will disagree and say, pre season not over yet wait and see. But surely some of you must be looking at what other teams are doing and be wondering to yourselves why arent we doing much. At the moment we would struggle to put out 11 players. I appreciate how hard Les must be working to bring new faces in but as I have said its beyond what he can do as he cant offer enough to entice people to come. We will be playing friendlies as we did last season with a mix of kids, first teamers and trialists many of us have never heard of. Les has even stated that we are bringing in some foriegn lads to have a look at. We will get dangerously close to the start of the season as we did last year and be scrambling around for players.

To me it simply looks like the club is dying and I may seem like the prophet of doom here but I really think we will end up going down. Ian and Admin remember this post for next May, if I am wrong (and I hope I am) gladly beat me about the head with it and ban me for life from the forum. That my friend is how convinced I am that things are simply going to lurch from bad to worse for us over the next few months.

I can understand your concerns but i think quite a few clubs will be in a similar position to ourselves.

The lack of crativity and goals would seem to be our biggest problem again with currently only gornell and thomas-moore on our books as strikers.

I do think we have soom good players for this level in taylor labadie welsh goodison thomas-moore to name but a few. It will be interesting to see who else we manage to bring into the club as a few more playes like labadie would give everyone a big boost.

But like you say - we went through exactly the same thing last year - only half a team going into pre-season and trialists all over the place. Only this year we havent got McAteer playing in the friendlies!

Sure we spent more on wages for new players - but look at those players who came in......McLaren, Mahon, Ricketts. No its not ideal, yes this season is going to be another struggle - but we arent the only club in the division in that situation. I think it all depends who Les finds to bring in. There are some bargains to be had - even on the amount we can afford to pay on wages. Sure - aiming for mid table mediocrity isnt what we want to be doing - but thats the reality of our financial situation. And without a new sugar daddy coming in we are always going to struggle - and the more we struggle the lower the crowds will be - and the spiral effect begins. BUT I agree on one point. Our youth system has been a salvation to this club over the last 20 years. It is very short sighted if we start to neglect that.

TheBunnyBellEnd has made some excellent comments above, especially point 3. Les is obviously a great man-manager but is surely reliant upon the assistance and experience of his coaching staff when it comes to tactical and strategical knowledge.

With all due respect to Garnett I don't feel he can offer this support alone. Yes, there will be coaches brought in at youth team level due to the other departures but this is unlikely to impact on the first team which again puts an emphasis on my earlier comment that we should appoint one or two experienced but current players to help Les out.

I havent posted for a while as I thought I would sit back and see how we got on before commenting. As you can see from my original post I had some grave concerns during the summer as to the direction the club was heading in and although we are only a couple of games in already the writing is well and trely on the wall.

Les looks tactically retarded with no idea on how to change things and seems hell bent on playing negative long ball football at every opportunity. Most of the time during games he stands with his arms folded not saying anything. I had hoped he had learnt from this mistakes he made last season and would have done a little more to create the image of being a manager and not a physio. I know this is a little thing but even what he wears on a match day doesnt give the impression he is in a position of authority.

The team as I said in my original post has been assembled on a tiny budget and consists of a handful of senior professionals and the rest are kids either on loan or on short term contracts. Our defence for example only has Goodison with any real experience the rest are only kids including Collister. They are being bullied out of games and the experience of the opposition will consistently exploit the youngsters naivety. ITM looks like he has lost the plot and wants to join his dad, Ladabie seemed to spend most of the game on saturday walking round the pitch shaking his head in frustration and the rest really didnt look that bothered. To me it looks like the spirit Les managed to build last season has evaporated very quickly.

One of the most frustrating things for me however is that even after the great escape last season it was obvious that the squad and to some extent the management were not of an adequate standard to cope in league 1. To me I had hoped that the chairmen and board would have recognised that without sufficient investment we would have been in exactly the same position again this season. We needed a good clearout of players although again I would question some of the players released to those who were kept. And the club needed to be looking at experienced league 1/2 players who could hold their own in this division. I also felt that Les should probably have walked away a hero and be held high in all supporters estimation, instead he will now experience fans turning on him and if results do not improve rapidly will no doubt walk away.

Frustration does not do justice to how I am currently feeling and to be honest I will not be going on Tuesday night. To be honest the start of this season and the way pre season went is an echo of what happened at the beginning of last season. I genuinely hope things do get turned around however I just cant see it. (queue the were only 4 games in etc, but bare in mind Les has already been in charge for half a season and has had a full pre season to get the team prepared,)

No, the situation isn't going to improve. It's going to be a long, hard season and I think we'll be fighting at the bottom end of the table again.

First post of the season, so here goes.

It's going to be a similar season to last - some highs (Millwall, Southampton, Norwich) and some truly dreadful lows (Hartlepool, Wycombe). In the end we'll stay up if we match our record of last season under Les, but at times it won't be pretty.

We are where we are because of the money we have to spend. That's the sad fact about football these days, by and large you get what you are able to pay for.

I'm not as pessimistic as some. We'll get Broomes back, maybe add another loanee, the young strikers will get fit and we'll be competitive again, like last season.

A good cup run will lift the spirits, so hopefully we'll do the business tomorrow. We always seem to raise our game against better teams anyway.

We seem to be significantly weaker than last year

Probably right and will know for sure when Les plays any remaining cards up his sleeve (not many I accept!) eg. Blanchard starting, Mahon and Taylor back or any Super kids coming through - OR not as the case may be.

To be honest whatever formation I do like to see balance and see strikers doubling up as wide men on both flanks is hard work. Playing wide and making something of limited space is a specialist job and for my money Cresswell further forward will give balance and a decenet left foot. He has shown he can create and even score when further upfield - should give him the job formally.

As someone on another site said - only 5 points off a playoff place :)

Anyone know anything about this Morrow fellow who is apparently joining us?

3 goals in 40 games does not sound promising. Don't know why we arn't signing a right winger if there is money left.

From reports he sounds to have similar problems to O'Callaghan. He is NOT the answer to our problems and if he being brought in to replace Moore then we are truely in the brown stuff. Why are we signing another forward when we have already just offered deals to two young lads who are both strikers?

We can have whoever upfront but if we dont create any chances we simply will not score.

As stated earlier if we do not create chances goals will not be scored - even class player wold struglle with the service we provide. Something I harped on about during preseason along with bemoaning the fact we never signed Willemsen....A right winger! Hey ho For the record he went to Almere FC...Dutch B league or something ..average gate 2,000:cool:

Maybe we should all go down to Prenton Park with our boots and see if any of us can get a game on the right wing:lol: We can't be much worse than Gornell!

Lets face it - on our resources - best we can hope for is staying up. So I would take 5th from bottom now if it was offered.

Not that I dont think that an experienced manager would do better, I do, but even if for arguments sake Ronnie came back (which he would be mad to), as our budget gets smaller and smaller each year, best we can hope for each year is to stay up.

Honestly there is probably some truth in that:!:
This idea of playing a striker with a good work rate out wide is being played out elswhere across the water and for my money Kuyt is not much more effective than our guy - just cannot understand it. We here of these players who have good engines and can run all day - well so can Paula Radcliffe, but we don't want to be chasing the ball all day - it would be nice if we kept it and/or done something useful with it.

Right Wing - should I have said right midfield?

It's extremely frustrating watching Rovers. They are grinding out some decent away results at the moment but are dreadfully dire to watch at home. I hope to god Les does something different tonight. [-o<

I see a repeat of the start of last season under Barnes the squad is not properly balanced as with the injuries to Taylor & Mahon we are short in midfield.

With the odd exception the players we are bringing in have virtually no experience of playing league football.

I would happily settle for avoiding relegation.
