I am not sure we need two more forwards, but signing a quality striker like Rowe could be the difference between a play-off push and a season spent in the bottom half of the table. Goalscorers are that important.

I think we need one quality striker, be that Rowe or someone else, who will be in contention for a first team place. History suggests Norwood willget banned at some stage in the season, both he and Mullin could pick up an injury or lose form. We also need a squad striker to be on the bench at times, capable of coming on to do a job for us if the need arises. It doesn't look like Waring is seen suitable for that role and don't know if any of the youngsters like Walker-Rice are ready for that.

I don't think it is essential to sign a mediocre fourth choice striker purely to make up numbers. In the event of major injuries, we have players who can do a job up front (Jennings, Cole). Last season we effectively had 2.5 centre forwards with Mangan playing a bit-part role, albeit we were lucky with injuries.

As expected, we are finding it quite difficult to recruit at this level, so we can't afford to be as profligate as we were in the past.

I would prefer Cole to play in a more forward role, as he doesn’t always stick to the script and drifts inside when deployed out wide. However with the current squad, we haven’t got enough wide players either.

Interested that you say it was expected we’d have difficulties recruiting at this level, what made you think that? Given that we have a top third budget and there are a fair number of out of work players around now, I’d hoped we might have been further down the line in squad building. The pair of triallists we had didn’t on paper have the most impressive cv, though better judgement will be made by those who’ve seen them in action. .

It is more difficult to recruit at this level because we are competing for players with eight or ten clubs of similar size. That was not the case in the National League. Several of the strikers signed by Notts, Mansfield, Vale etc might have interested us.

I,m wondering if there are players out there who would come to Tranmere but are being advised by agents to hold fire I think m. palios said clark was off to Fleetwood no matter what. Tranmere may have a decent budget but wont want to see it all go on one player if we are after others

Winger Jonny smith joins on loan for the season from Bristol City. He impressed last season when at Fylde and did well there.

From what I remember he’s left footed and a proper winger with some pace and the odd trick.

Pleased with that. 10 goals and 11 assists last season

Smith had a very good season loan at Fylde looks to be a very good signing

Smith tore us apart when we were thrashed at Fylde last season. I think it is a very, very good signing.

Interesting post match comments from Micky, really playing down any hope of a marquee signing I.e Rowe.

May just be all talk but he’s clearly concerned about numbers

Yes, a very interesting interview with MM. He just confirms what a lot of us already knew, ie. we can't compete financially with clubs like Notts, Lincoln, Vale etc. who have been throwing money around this summer. We have lost three years of FL income and it will take time for the club to recover.

Mellon sounds more concerned about the size and quality of the squad than at any time since he has been here, which is a worry. He cuts a frustrated figure in that interview, although as Sparky implies, it could largely be annoyance at not getting the Rowe deal completed rather than a genuine belief that we will struggle next season.

Given some of the players we had last season with squad numbers who were never/rarely going to be selected, are we really that worse off?
How did Zoum perform last night?
He'd be a great addition and then defensively we would be boxed off.

I don't think the squad is as weak as MM suggests. Most of the new signings seem of good quality and we retained nearly everybody we wanted to keep, with the obvious exception of Cook.

Is that interview a coded message to Palios or the Fylde chairman ?

The frustration is understandable. We tried everything to keep Cook and it then becomes very difficult to find a replacement who is going to score 20+ a season. I think the signings have been good, but we are falling short up front.

I think we'd have liked to keep Clarke too, but it became clear that wouldn't happen. At one point we were looking close to getting Ginnelly, but that didn't get over the line and he went to Walsall.

It's hard to gauge to what extent Micky's remarks are aimed at a wider audience and an indicator that we're not in a position to pay excessive fees. Due to the transfer window closing at the start of the season, he knows that we need to have sufficient squad depth from the off, last season's loan signings DMH and Banks in particular turned around a dismal start, but a similar option won't be available now. It's always hard to know how much weight to attach to pre-season, but the first two games have been encouraging and provide some options to explore with regard to player recruitment.

My feeling is that the cost of being in L2 again has taken the owners by surprise and we cannot compete with the big spenders. In that context, I think Mark Palios should actually rein in any remarks raising expectations, when we appear unable to afford a marquee signing and haven't replaced Andy Cook. As Accrington and Macclesfield showed last season, money isn't everything, but without it, you need a fair slice of luck in avoiding injuries. Our minimum target for next season is to stay up and the signings we're yet to make will be pivotal in determining whether and how easily we can reach that bottom line.

Micky’s basically saying that we have to bide our time until we’re in a position to enter the cattle market along with the other also rans I suspect. Unless we’ve a cunning plan of course!

I don't think you have got any basis for claiming that the cost of playing at this level has 'taken the owners by surprise'. I think that is highly unlikely. In fact, as the chairman is an experienced accountant with considerable knowledge of finances at this level, it is probably complete nonsense.

There are some mixed messages coming from the club however.
